Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Writing is fun to a point. Breathing in the inspiration and exhaling the words to make it come alive is exhilarating and . . . fun. Almost everything that follows the construction and completion of a novel is not fun. For me. Although I love people, interacting with readers and writers, and many other meaningful connections with those in the biz of publishing, the nuts and bolts of “process” on the road to publication is not even slightly fun. Not to say it’s not important, required, necessary—insert your own description. It’s just not fun.

Cover design is fun. It’s so utterly cool to be involved in it, to have real input, and then to watch what emerges from the skilled and talented imaginations of cover artists. Fun.

Discussing stories, recommending novels, getting the feel for what an individual likes to read and then telling them about the perfect books for them . . . real fun.

So what’s fun stuff for you in the book biz?

Lord, thank you for the pleasure and work and the learning experience. Walked with you, it’s meaningful. Apart from you not only can I do nothing, it all means nothing. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Writing/rewriting is fun. Research is fun. The rest? UGH!

I love creating new lives. There’s nothing more gratifying than writing a new scene that my husband reacts emotionally to. (He’s my very gracious first reader.)
I actually love editing. I’m a seat-of-the-pants writer so when I edit, I get to deepen my shallow scenes and remove extra details. My scenes come alive in the editing process.
But the most fun? Meeting people like you, Nicole, & gaining new friends even if it is in cyberspace. Last September at the ACFW Conference, I got to meet–in person–many of my fellow bloggers from Inkspirational Messages. It doesn’t get any more fun than that.

    Brenda J., true!
Brenda A., I don’t mind editing my own stuff after many months away from a piece. Scared to death to let anyone else do that.
Meeting people like both of you online is indeed so much fun and so meaningful. It was fun to meet a few professionals at the conferences after email conversations. It’s like meeting friends I haven’t seen in a long time . . . I agree: fun stuff.
