Okay. Does the NFL ever start without a little controversy? This year amidst the neverending putrid saga of the Rex Ryan Jets or the ridiculous over-hyping of the Jerry Jones' over-rated Dallas Cowboys, there is the typical dispute between yet another union and management which has given us an ugly picture of the hypocrisy of coaches and fans deriding the substitute officials for preseason football games because of the regular officials going on strike. I find this particularly amusing because I didn't think there were too many people in multiple occupations who could do a worse job than the "professional NFL officials". Having been victimized too many times by bad and inaccurate calls, I say bring on these new guys.

The ugly part hasn't been their officiating as much as it's been the one-upmanship certain coaches have exerted from the sidelines as well as on the field (i.e. Jim Harbaugh) screeching their disdain and disapproval for calls which were ultimately shown to be correct in replay.

I know there have been mistakes in calls and interpreting the unique NFL rules, but I can't see where these practiced officials, though not in the NFL, could do a worse job than the ones who want yet more money to do their part-time jobs on the field. Sorry. Let them go find that kind of money and perks anywhere else. Adios.

Father, help us to keep sports in perspective. Help us to appreciate the diverse talents you've given to each one of us. Thank you for fun. Thank you for your incomprehensible generosity. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
