First novels. This is mine. All 744 pages of it written originally in long hand notebooks. The Glossary of Terms (at the suggestion of my brother) consumed 3 and 1/4 of those pages in order to enlighten the non-racetrackers who would read it since horse racing – like many occupations – has its own unique language. Eight and a half years to write. Would do so many things differently now. Of course.

Got any interesting first novel stories?

Father, thank you for the experience of creating a story from your instruction and for the words of encouragement that carried me through this saga and remain true to this day. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Interesting stories? No. But even though I’ve drafted a second manuscript, my first novel is still my favorite. One of these days I’ll stop sitting on it, trying to perfect it to death, and start submitting again. But the time isn’t right.

“Interesting” is a word that in this case might only be such to other writers. I always enjoy hearing about the trials and tribulations, etc., of first novels, B.
