Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

    Tiredness-12250668

In the world of writing there are multiple items that can make us weary. There are just as many in the world of reading. We've talked about predictability, formulaic prose, weak or cardboard characters, the overuse of clichés, and the annoying total adherence to the "rules of writing".

From the writing standpoint, after a point, it's the rereading of the manuscript for me. How many times do you suppose you reread your story before you let it sit for awhile? And then you reread it again how many times? I can't tell you how many times I've reread some of mine.

What do you find wearying in the worlds of writing and reading?

Father, refresh my soul and help me to get my projects completed. Please, God. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

As to writing (as in other parts of life) I find it wearying that I cannot nail down a super-awesome way to track info–the research that you do, character names, traits, locations, and other assorted things that becomes a mountain of info for just one novel. I’ve tried spreadsheets, binders, track changes, you name it. But I still feel completely disorganized and still struggle to find what I need when I need it. As I am currently re-reading one of my manuscripts, I find myself asking “Now did I remember to verify that those are the symptoms for that illness or did I just put that in there as a placeholder as I went?” After so much time passes I can’t remember. That irks me. And makes more work.

Great point, Brenda. Keeping track of information so that it can be quickly recalled or remembered to check on or to inject a particular piece of information, dialogue, etc. can be difficult. I keep a separate legal pad with things I need to check on to insert, when to insert, or whatever. Not real efficient, but then I don’t do the kind of research you must do. It would be wearying at that level.
