Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

This is the month when most of the regular programming for the big three networks conclude their seasons. In some cases the final episodes of a series will usher "The End" to a long-running favorite. Monday evening gave viewers the concluding episode to the popular but cancelled Castle which lasted for 8 seasons – a considerable time for series TV. The renewed NCIS said goodbye on Tuesday evening to one of its well-liked co-stars Michael Weatherly who played the lovable, obnoxious, tender but tough, movie buff Very Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo. The also renewed spin-off NCIS New Orleans gave a thrilling finale to its season as did the earlier finale of the NCIS-LA version, also renewed.

Castle's series finale was one of the worst, ranking right up there with the conclusion of the old series M.A.S.H., both ruining an otherwise good plot with a ridiculous ending in the last minute or two. It's impossible to imagine how the writers decided these endings could work. Unfitting conclusions to otherwise successful series.

NCIS ended well for the season and was very well done – emotionally charged as it should've been. Tony's character will be thoroughly missed and will definitely change the fabric of the series. Gibbs will no longer have a rebellious sidekick to head-slap. Timothy McGee won't have to contend with the harassment he endured from the "senior" agent. And things just won't be the same without Tony.

Michael Weatherly will rebound immediately in a new series titled Bull.

Father, the only One who matters in this vast existence is you. We're all desperate for you whether we know it or not. Apart from you, we can do nothing. Please help us all to know you more. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I don’t watch these shows but the Five-0 season ender (6th season) was horrible. Five-0 has been taking a very steep nose-dive since a little less than mid-way through season 4. I’ve hung on hoping they could somehow re-invent themselves but have been disappointed over and over and over again.
So I’ve officially given up. If I watch any TV at all it’ll be HGTV and Jeopardy. I went through a spell in the early 90’s where I quit watching TV altogether because there wasn’t anything of quality on. Time for another TV hiatus.

I still haven’t watched the finale for Castle, but I will–just because. I don’t think I watched more than 2 episodes this entire season as it seemed the storyline was just repeating a previous season’s story. Losing Beckett didn’t concern me because I’m one of the few who never liked her.

Brenda, I will say I’m sick of the fighting between Danny and the Commander. Not ready to give up on it, but it needs to improve no question.
Bren, at times I didn’t like Beckett either, but I felt the same about Castle at times. What I learned about myself is I primarily watch TV for the drama. I’m not big on silly. And so much of the last season was just silly. I think we agreed these two had little on screen chemistry, although I think it improved in the last two seasons in spite of the rumors and hype about them hating each other. Like her or not, there was nothing to replace her and I don’t think any of them really planned to continue the series without her.

And there is a reason NCIS is the most watched show in the world. I think it can survive without Weatherly since introducing new central characters has been its strong suit. Starting to feel that way about NCIS: New Orleans as well. Then again, I’m prejudiced, NOLA is like a second home and they just keep getting it right about the accents, the city, and the culture.
As to 5.0 – din’t watch it for a while because I didn’t think a reboot would work. It is showing the same problem Castle did over the last year though – stinging a story line out way past what should be, forgetting the characters are what give any story have legs. Whether it’s Festus and Doc on Gunsmoke, Peter and Olivia on Fringe, or the whole crew on Everybody Loves Raymond, plot carries a story along but it’s the characters that make me care enough to keep watching.

Let’s face it, Tim, Donald Bellisario is a genius when it comes to series TV – particularly involving a military connection. I love all the NCIS shows, and I’m glad the NOLA spin-off is really starting to click.
Five-0 has been disappointing with the friction between Danny and Steve a constant irritant. I do hope they remedy it because it ruins the narrative. They’ve had some really interesting and action-packed episodes, but when they focus on the “odd couple” stuff, it takes the whole series down.
