Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

I want you to know that all of my Christmas decorations are up and have been for over a week. I love it!

I want you to also know I have wrapped presents under the tree and others ready to wrap and/or deliver. Stockings are nearly stuffed. Still have some shopping to do, but I'd say I'm 3/4 done.

Believe me, I'm not telling you this to brag or gloat. On the contrary. I'm letting you know how much I love and celebrate Christmas. It's always been a huge deal to me and especially after meeting Jesus.

So. You'd think someone who loves Christmas as much as I do would love to sit back and watch Christmas movies and/or read some Christmas novels. Right? Well, you'd be oh-so-wrong! I don't like or watch Christmas movies. I don't like Christmas stories and have yet to enjoy a Christmas novel. Definitely not my thing. Strange, huh?

Father, thank you for the pure message of Christmas, for giving us your Son, for sending the Holy Spirit in your time. We're desperate for you today just as we've always been. Thank you is never enough. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I haven’t read that many Christmas novels myself. But I did write a novella last year for my Double Barrel mysteries series because it seemed that a lot of people do like to read Christmas stories. Mine is really a mystery that just happens to be set at Christmas time. I think a good mystery can be read any month of the year! 🙂 Personally, I would rather read books than put my tree up and down in the span of two weeks. Since you’ve already got yours up, how about coming to Minnesota and helping a friend out? I’ll provide the music and the inevitable snowstorm.

I could get a Red-eye, right? Would love to, Barb, but, you know . . .
I don’t mind if Christmas happens in the story – like your mystery which I read and it doesn’t meet my criteria for a solely “Christmas novel” so of course I enjoyed it.
I included Christmas in one of my novels (Breath of Life), but it was only because of the time of year and it was a brief (but positive) part of the story.
I guess why I feel the way I do is because I don’t think the movies or the stories do Christmas justice. Now of course that’s my opinion and I’ve felt that way for a long time. I just don’t do Christmas movies or novels.
And, yes, most/all of my friends love them both.

Oh, wow. I think I have one present purchased! But I am one of those crazies who goes out on Black Friday to shop. It’s been a tradition with the women in our family for the last 30 years. BUT we go to a mall that doesn’t get busy until 10 am, and we’re out of there by then. Then we hit Target, which is no longer super busy, and then we go out to eat! It’s a day we all look forward to.
As for Christmas movies, there are a few I watch every year, but you’ll rarely catch me watching a Hallmark movie. I’ve read a couple of Christmas books this year (not something I usually do) and have been underwhelmed. 😦
And here’s another BUT – I am part of a Christmas anthology that I have high hopes for! And I’ve written a couple of books that take place at Christmas time, but I wouldn’t generally market them as Christmas stories.
I do think you’re right that the movies don’t do justice for Christmas. Most are all about Santa and decorations and presents and never mention Jesus.

Hey, I know the “outrage” about Black Friday – especially since they’ve moved the time up to include Thanksgiving! I don’t mind it, and I’ve often participated in Black Friday specials. It’s fun! And I think it’s a wonderful tradition to get together with family/friends to hit the sales and make a great day of it. Very cool!
Yeah, Christmas movies don’t seem to include the Reason for the Season, and sometimes the novels skirt the Gospel for the “romance” of it. Not a fan anyway.
I know you’re a part of a Christmas anthology, and I have no doubt you’ve done a great job with your part of it.
