Split Sense by Barbara Ellen Brink was published in 2011. If you like speculative/supernatural fiction, this one should pique your interest.

Howard Pharmaceuticals is into nefarious testing of new drug treatments and is using test subjects from unfortunate pregnant mothers. Blackmailing people within their sphere of influence for compliance, they have secured the adoption of one set of twins and one surviving male twin. The doctor who delivered the babies switches one female who survived birth for a female child who did not and keeps it a secret for many years.

The two physicians ministering the drugs to these children are total opposites in character. One lusts for power and control and is in command of the twin boys while the other male child, Alexander, has the blessing of being treated by the other more careful and compassionate doctor. "Zander" as they call the boy has a guilt-ridden father who also works for his uncle, the owner and CEO of Howard Pharmaceuticals who seems to have zero concern for any of the subjects and their offspring nor the unscrupulous practices of his company, and Zander's mother spends most of her time in a depressed zone with little to do with her husband or Zander.

Zander has remarkable skills to detect and feel the emotions of other people as they're formulated within the person. He often hears their thoughts and is able to determine their consequent actions. As he matures, he considers himself a lab rat and longs to know more about his origin, testing, injections, and what exactly is the objective for his continued experiment.

Meanwhile the girl who was secretly provided to a family at birth is a piano prodigy who sees colors in notes and human beings and can determine the differences between the colors of health and illness. Her music heals because God has chosen to use her divine music for that purpose. When this beautiful gift causes a rift within her family, she is broken-hearted.

Tragedy, murder, psychopathy, and supernatural events with a twist combine to expose the power plays made by various members of Howard Pharma while the needs of two families are realized, threatened, and ultimately resolved by the faith of their children.

Barbara has written a story that plays out like a movie – easily giving the reader visuals of the characters and scenes. Split Sense is speculative plus supernatural fiction creating "possibility" mixed with the miraculous while demonstrating the absolute evil of those who lust after power and control of others seeking the glory for themselves because of their wicked desires to best their Creator. As with the one who tried that in heaven, destruction is their ultimate result.

Father, please continue to bless Barbara's abilities, writing, and fill her with your abundance as she writes stories for your glory. Keep her safe from all harm, and continue to provide all she needs for her writing time. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
