Thank you is not enough. You gave it all that we could be free. You fought for us and for others all over the world to give us all the desire to remain free or to gain freedom. We honor you, your courage, your sacrifice. May we never forget.

God, you are the source of real freedom. Jesus, you died for our freedom and reclamation. Holy Spirit, lead hearts to know the One God who gives life even after death. Please bless and lead those who serve and protect them from the evil one. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

    Ephesians 6:11-12 (NIV)

  •   Excerpt

This is from my new Work in Progress tentatively titled Then . . . you. "He's a recluse. She's seeking refuge."

    From Chapter 18

He sat in front of his array of monitors and electronic equipment, waiting for a download to complete, fidgeting with his favorite pen in one hand and squeezing a resistance ball in the other, staring at nothing. Maybe, and he admitted to himself right then that there was no “maybe” about it, the arrival of this woman into his life was no coincidence. The fact that he didn’t shut the door on her, drenched and afraid, gave evidence that deep down inside him he still had a beating heart willing to give a portion of himself to help someone. Because before she showed up on his porch, he sincerely had his doubts.

If ever he was wired to do certain things, if there really was such a thing as a hero-complex, he’d confess to having one. And she played right into his fantasy of being that guy, the one who saved the beauty from the beast. And without even trying she pushed all the right buttons with her perceptive comments and deeply affirming and truly respectful compliments. That emptiness he carried around like a too-heavy trophy? When he opened his door to her and led her down the hall to his bathroom, when she paced before the fireplace admitting to her “clichéd” relationship with a dude, that stupid overweight trophy he’d been hoisting started sliding off his drooping shoulders and morphed into a battle shield and sword.

Ping! “Download Complete” Work, man. Keep your head on straight.

Father, only you provide inspiration and words. Apart from you, I can do nothing. Thank you is never enough. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Interpretations for this photograph range from mild frustration at the inactivity of the creative urges to the dutiful reading over of what has just been written. And wherever your mind might take you to put yourself inside the skin of this woman in the picture.

And that's the supreme job of an author: to take you inside the created characters for you to identify with the emotional makeup of one to the utter repulsion of the worst side of you – to someone, even at your worst, you could never become.

A good novel will make you feel. The utter failure of a novel will be when it's tossed aside and makes you, the reader, wish you'd spent your time elsewhere. The amazing thing about either of those feelings is that they will be shared by many and disdained by many others. Very few times do most readers agree that a story is excellent or appalling. But clearly the diverse opinions will cover those ratings and everything in between.

So, again, I ask: What do you want from your novel reading?

Father, thank you for writing and writers, for emotional reactions and for the depth of feelings books can produce. Thank you for allowing me to write the stories you've given me. I ask that you would keep them coming. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

My sincere thanks to Debra for mentioning this beautiful song in relation to a previous post. Enjoy the truth in this meaningful song. (And hang around for the magnificent song that follows it: one of my top five.)

Father, this is the perfect truth in the lyrics of this inspired song. Every good and perfect gift comes down from you. Thank you is truly never enough. For it all. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Rules by Dustin Stevens is the third in the A Ham Novel Series

"Ham", as you may recall is former military, but now is a "fixer" for private hire. Her contact Mikey is also former military who hooks her up with private requests to solve problems. Sometimes those assignments are easier than others, straightforward, no complications. More often than not they take some odd turns and information is scarce, and this might call for extraordinary measures to determine the solution.

Ham has been anxious for what seems like a long time, waiting for a new assignment. When her anxiety level spikes, she's more than the handful she normally is. I can't call Ham a sociopath because she does display occasional emotion and rare sentiment, but her upbringing didn't allow for a lot of that, and she's been trained well to avoid it. When Mikey finally calls, she's over-ready to get rolling. This time? Las Vegas. Probably the only place an aging gangster, a paralyzed former detective, a released killer, a wealthy, conniving businessman, and a hired assassin would find themselves intertwined.

When Ham meets the former detective, she can tell that if there was any possible way he could manage to do this, he would already have started. But since he can't, and he knows it, he explains the circumstance and hands over a file to Ham. As with most who come in contact with her, they have no idea what she's capable of, and that's just as well for her.

To her frustration, she's forced to contact Mikey repeatedly for information that his tech guy can provide, and also needs some things "cleaned up" when two hired amateurs attempt to come between her and a potential victim.

One thing about Ham, she won't stop until the job is done. Period. She's a well-written character, unique, and beyond tough. She's dangerous to anyone who opposes her. Dustin Stevens hasn't written a Ham novel (he's added other stories to his different series) in a while and in this one he seems to make her "harder" than usual which is a shame because I think in the two previous novels, he had her demeanor just right. And, for me, who is clearly on the opposite side of this author's political leanings, I don't appreciate it when he injects his "subtle" opinions. Also, I've yet to figure out why "hell" is capitalized repeatedly. Aside from those annoyances, I can say the last segment of this novel is exactly the kind of ending you want to see happen as it slips into thriller mode. It's fast-developing after all the stops and starts of Ham's dilemmas on this assignment and concludes sucessfully with a potential promise for the next story.

    Some profanity.

Father, you are the gifter. Clearly, you've given Dustin talent. May he know the One who gives it to him. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Five things I wish I could do:

    Krav Maga

    Write a thriller

Talk to Johnny Depp one on one

Help write the final Mitch Rapp story – creating the finally right love interest for him

See Race made into a movie – just because I think it would be the easiest one to do as far as sticking to the story

Father, you know my heart and what you want me to do. That's really all that matters. Help me to be the one you designed me to be. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Not that long ago but back a little ways, my novel Seeing . . . has touched a few hearts. I know it did mine to write it.

"When a waitress and a widower truck driver are thrown together out of desperation and necessity, temptations rise high and reveal the need for true love. But hardened Bonita Carson wants nothing to do with the real love that insightful Micah Jones has to offer. Can Micah ultimately rescue Bonita from herself before it’s too late, or will Bonita choose to leave and continue living a life of hopelessness?"

Father, only you provide what I need to write stories. Only you. Thank you is not enough. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
