Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

  •    Winter_days_Wallpaper_yw4xj

The year is officially in progress. The Bowl Games are coming to a close. The college players are declaring their desire to enter the NFL Draft. Others remain for their fifth year of eligibility.

The Wild Card games in professional football begin Saturday, and it will be one and done for some teams. Rabid fans await their team's victories while others project their hopes for the next season.

In the meantime life churns. Forward. Backward. Never standing still. Fortunate. Unfortunate. Tragedies. Sorrows. Triumphs. Joys.

Much of what we do determines our joys and sorrows. Some things come to us like hard punches to the solar plexus.

Love expands or goes on hiatus. We cannot manufacture the Love of God, but we persist in our efforts to live and provide it as our Lord would have us do.

Hatred explodes all over the globe. Fueled by evil, celebrated by demonic activity, wicked people appear in all walks and areas of life sowing their ugly ideas and fomenting their detestable language and ways.

Christians face more and more opposition and prejudice because they speak of sin and because of their citing the bible which states Jesus is the only avenue to His Father and heaven.

Some people of faith curse others and disgrace the Name of the Lord, showing neither His love for people nor His divine undeserved grace, unaware of how they receive it yet fail to extend it to others.

Resolutions, goals, projects, and desires are formulated with care and determination and fail with disappointment and embarrassment in a matter of days.

None of it this is new, yet the New Year brings the hope that some of the misery will not prevail. That right will have its day for another season and wrong will be crushed and overcome. That God will raise up his faithful ones to fight the good fight and bring a reckoning to the evildoers.

Yes, all this on day two . . .

Father, raise up your army for a season. Help us to do what you have for us to do. We're desperate for you. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. I lived here when the Space Needle was built for the World's Fair. For me, the city has gained many things but lost so much more. It's now a haven for liberalism, and common sense has in many cases been forced out of its borders.

New Year's Day is here. 2014 proceeds as a result of God's grace. What will it bring? Only He knows. As I said yesterday, my hope is His modified and specific justice will be served. I will leave you with this scripture to ponder as this new year begins:

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.  Galatians 6:7 (NIV)

I don't make resolutions, but I have hopes. Hope that I will grow closer to Jesus, be more obedient to God, and hear more clearly from the Holy Spirit.

Oftentimes, people select a word for the new year. I have to tell you the one that just came to mind and the one in which I will be incorporating into prayer. It is justice.

Not all evil will be vanquished on this earth until the Prince of Peace establishes His kingdom, and then just for a season. This earth will pass away, but the word of the Lord will never pass away. Prophecy will be fulfilled. The end will come. A lot will happen until then.

In the meantime may we see some justice in the land of the living. May we see some wickedness fail and fall. May we watch God's mighty right hand carry His message of Truth and trample over some evil.

That is my hope for 2014. Jesus will prevail.

  •  Love-me

You can dress it in a business suit, you can say the familiar phrase, "It's just business", and you can insist it's "not really", but the truth is in today's publishing world it's all about "me". And rarely is it pretty to watch no matter how you spin it. Publicizing your work makes it all about you.

You must promote, publicize, glorify, and celebrate it. Your face needs to be present on a Facebook Author Page, a Twitter account, Pinterest, Google +, Goodreads, and many other places where readers might be present and active. If you have a webpage for your author status, you must keep it updated to be effective. If you operate a blog, you must post regularly with attractive, clever, intellectual, or thoughtful posts to obtain consistent viewers.

You must be center-stage for most of what you choose to do, only taking a backseat to others when commenting on their various sites.

So. What it boils down to when all the extraneous additives or unnecessary "fat" is extracted is "the 'me' syndrome". Somehow you have to make it all about you. The question remains for each writer: How can I do this without alienating others and instead attracting them?

My answer? I have no idea.

Father, you know about all of this. You know what each one of us is assigned to do, and it's not about us: it's about You. You know how to help us. You know. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

When they [the Magi] had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."

So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."

When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.

May the residual joy of Jesus remain today and everyday from this moment on.

May it not only be about cleanup, back to work, sales and exchanges, and what to do, but rather ponder the question, "What will God ask of me this day?"

May the things that bring you anxiety, the things that incite fear, the things that produce guilt, the things that make you mad, the things that cause the tears, fade for just a while. Long enough to gain the perspective of Jesus: the same yesterday, today, and forever.

May you hunger for His touch, His words, His design – all just for you. You, the individual He created. You, the one He loves so much. You, not just any person but a unique and treasured son or daughter of the King.

Keep celebrating the day after Christmas. And every day after that. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

May the Heart, Soul, and Spirit of Christmas be yours this day.

                                   Merry Christmas

  •                          ThCOOFB1QL

For staunch unbelievers Christmas is just another holiday based on religious hooplah and celebrated for the fun of Santa, parties, gifts, and time off.

Missed is the opportunity to look into the definition of Love, the real One who brought it in human form to earth to save mankind from sin. God is Love. Defined. Described. Decided. Definitive. No match found in humanity. Nothing humanity can do to equal it. Nothing mankind can do to replicate it. Especially without acknowledging who it is, not what it looks like, not what it seems like or feels like, not what it's "supposed" to be in the human mind's eye.

    Love is unfathomable.

If your father, mother, sister, brother, son, daughter, friend, etc., turned on you and disavowed everything you stood for, everything you'd ever provided for their benefit, denied every good thing done on your behalf, you would know God's sorrow. If you didn't react in hatred, vengeance, brutality, or malice, you would know God's heart. If, instead, you allowed your loved one(s) to do as they chose, watched with anguish the trouble and pain they brought upon themselves, but you provided a way for them to be reinstated to the good life, forgave them for their deliberate attacks against all that was profitable to their character and well-being, and in this provision you included an eternity packed with beauty, truth, glory, and unimaginable bliss, you would be God, who you cannot be.

    This Love is unfathomable.

Nothing's free, right? What's the catch? Well, here it is: Ask Jesus Christ to forgive you and take over your life for you. Yield to the One who sacrificed His life to pay the price for your sinfulness – your wrong actions, words, commitments to bad choices and deeds. Ask Him to create a clean heart in you. That's what eternity with God requires.

The Holy Spirit touches souls, seeks out hurting hearts to draw them to Jesus Christ, to end their search for meaningful endeavors and redirect those goals to specifically designed objectives personalized for individuals willing to admit their humanity has failed them.

Yes, it'a all unfathomable. A Savior, born of a virgin, performer of miracles, the God-man Jesus Christ, miracle worker in every way, came to earth to set man free from eternal death and sin, his birth celebrated at "Christmas". Who can believe it? It's like a fairytale. I suppose it is. More like it's supernatural. All it takes to believe is a tiny element of faith, the willingness to acknowledge something, Someone, bigger than yourself, larger than humanity in all of its desecrating failures, philosophies, and religions. Jesus waits just for you. Because God is Love. Don't let Him be unfathomable to you this day. You don't want to pass on the original lover of your soul.

In the Name of Jesus, Amen. And a truly Merry Christmas.

                                ThumbnailCAVLARCY

We realized the seriousness of our endeavor right from the startling beginning. When you study the heavens, it’s a shocking discovery to find something new and so specific, something so amazingly bright set in place by some outrageous force. It beckoned to us, and after much discussion we knew we must pursue the phenomenon because not only our minds were in agreement but our hearts pulsed in our chests and stirred us like none of us had ever experienced. This star marked something, and we became determined to follow its marker.

Packing our satchels and gathering our wealth, somehow knowing there would be a requirement at the end of this journey, we loaded our best beasts with our survival gear and treasures and bid our associates farewell. Each one wished us good traveling and remained anxious to learn of this special light in the sky never before noted in the history of the stars. We weren’t entirely sure we could find our destiny with this star, but we knew we were all compelled to follow it.

The journey wore on, long and sometimes difficult. We faced some weather storms and had to rest more than we’d hoped. One thing was sure throughout our travels: the star never once hid itself in the clouds or diminished in its opaque brightness.

At night we wondered aloud to each other why it could’ve appeared at this time, so stark, so evident, so impossible to ignore. So we studied the publications we had, the prophecies of old, and we realized together that there was to be born a king of the Jews, and it was then that we knew this special birth must have a marker because of the unique description of this new king’s life. Something sacrificial would be required of him, something beyond the scope of mankind and the usual service of kings. We dared to assume this child was set apart for things too grand for us to fully comprehend. Perhaps those heavens we studied held a greater message than our simple hearts could compute, and at night when we discussed our journey and the gifts we felt we must bring as an offering, we’d often retreat to silence as we contemplated the magnitude of our destination in this moment in time. We sensed eternity placing its request upon our hearts, and at times we quaked in what could only be called a holy fear.

Since we were all our own personalities, some of us light-hearted and generally jovial, others of us severely focused and serious, we began to notice we had a joining of our souls on this journey and our usual petty grievances with one another which every so often occurred while we argued over the heavenly bodies no longer persisted. It was like we were joined in purpose, resolution, and a kind of faith we’d never known together. This star had presented an opportunity for us to set aside our professional differences, our dislike of certain characteristics in each of us, including ourselves, and I cannot recall one single incident of discord along the occasionally perilous journey.

We approached the great city of Jerusalem and the star shone even brighter—as impossible as that seemed, but we were all in agreement about that fact. Knowing we were in foreign lands, we asked some local teachers of their law about the prophecy to determine the exact location of this tiny king because the star seemed to shine over the entire area.

Shortly after seeking our information we were summoned by the Roman King Herod who inquired about the exact time the star had appeared. He made a strange request after telling us to go to Bethlehem, asking us to report back to him so he could go and worship the child.

When we packed up and headed out for Bethlehem, the star, in what could only be referred to as a miraculous compass, once again appeared more specifically and led us right to the exact home of the young child. We thrilled with anticipation for we knew the purpose of our journey was nearing its climax. The mother Mary’s eyes widened at our appearing and the extravagance of our gifts, but she seemed to understand the magnitude of our visit and her gracious welcoming allowed us to experience the marvel of the whole journey and culmination of supernatural events here in this small and common dwelling. The child's father, a gracious and humble man, seemed stricken with our obedience to make this journey but well able to understand it. Our surprise at the utter holiness of our visit overwhelmed us later that night.

We awoke having all experienced the same intense dream filled with warning not to return to King Herod’s court, so we set off for our distant home taking a different route, never to be the same again.

Following a star placed in the heavens by a holy hand who holds eternity gave us hope we hadn’t previously known. This little king radiated a glory we couldn’t have sensed without him, and we held him in our hearts as we traveled back to our land. We would never leave him behind even though we knew we would never see him again until that One who made the star we followed took us to be with Him.

    Merry Christmas. Happy Birthday, Jesus.
