Ten things . . .

. . . I need for a novel to be exceptional to me:

1.Well over 120,000 words

2.Characters which move me and cause me to relate to something that moves them

3.A redemptive message which isn’t afraid to incorporate the gospel of Jesus Christ

4.Contemporary story

5.Deep emotional pull

6.A sense of God’s anointing

7.The desire to keep reading—but slowly—because I don’t want it to end

8.Good dialogue.

9.Strong, original author’s voice

10.A satisfactory ending/conclusion (if a series)

How ‘bout you?

Father, you provide writers of all kinds because your desire is to reach all kinds of people in all kinds of ways. We try to limit you, but you are unlimited and cannot be contained. Thank you for that. Thank you for your glorious creativity which you share and disperse for your glory. May we participate with joy and hope and in obedience, our primary objective to honor you. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

    I find that I prefer Character driven books. I really need strong characters that I care about.
    But they also need to be doing something that is different from what I do, see, experience. I’ve started books that I’ve had to put down because I don’t care about the boring details of a housewife. I live that. Give me something that stimulates my imagination.

    Me, too, Kay. That’s why it’s so hard to read a book that uses unlikable characters–very hard for me to enjoy a book using that method of story telling.

    Includes a scene involving at least one exploding gasoline tanker. Honestly, I don’t know why you keep forgetting that part.

    I’m not sure I can define it but I know it when I read it.
    No paper thin characters. No cliche characters.
    Not simply entertaining. Something that makes a deeper point.
    etc, etc.
