Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Some of us just can’t do it. I mean we can try, somewhat, like kinda. But, no, in the accepted or inventive or inspired way: no. Not gonna happen.

Yeah, I’m stuck on “marketing” again. The “m” word.

The plain—and simple—reason is because in order to do it effectively, it takes a lot of self focus. And self-promotion. And self-selling. And self. So, in speaking for my-self here, I do enough things about me. If I have to weasel my way into every peripheral conversation in order to introduce new people to my novels, well, huh-uh. Yeah, you know sometimes I really want to do that because to talk about them is to introduce potential readers to the plots and characters and books they’ve never read. Of course I want to tell them about mine. But when it comes right down to it, it’s difficult to insert information about me when there are more important things and issues to discuss with people.

And being honest here, I get tired of writers inserting their advertisements about their books, products, etcetera every chance they get. I understand the way the game is played, but I wonder if anyone else feels like it gets pretty old after awhile. Some authors are immune to those feelings—they’re ideal choices for publishers.

So, there. I don’t even wanna talk about it anymore.

Have a wonderful weekend. Enjoy the life God has given you.

Father, you’re the One I hope to please. I fall short at every level of humanity, but with you all things are possible. I love you, Lord. Help me to be the one you want me to be, in the Name of Jesus, Amen.

    Well, yes. And no.
I know just the kind of writer you’re talking about. I don’t appreciate that approach and could never do that kind of promotion.
But I think there’s another way. Of course this is speculation on my part because I don’t have a book to sell, but I still think the deal is to give to others and they in turn will do the talking for me.
And I don’t mean “give” in a trade-off sort of way. I mean give. And they in turn will also want to give. It’s the nature of generosity. It breeds.
And Nicole, I think you’re doing that. You are one of the most faithful blog commenters in cyberspace. You interact with any number of us bloggers, which is great for discussion. You spark people’s thinking. You give of your time and your ideas.
As I see it, I would expect to see a picture of your book cover here on your blog. And if other bloggers stop by your site as I do regularly, they will see the information, possibly ask questions or read a first chapter. Not because you’ve made a point of telling people to do that, but because you’ve generously given of yourself.
That’s the model I want to explore anyway.
Except, I think I might also do some inviting. 😉

Very encouraging comments, Becky. Thank you so much.
You know, I would have a picture of my books here if I had the tech savvy to figure out how to do it. ;( That doesn’t offend me.
Since you know the type of marketing that does offend me, I’m grateful to hear you don’t care for it either.
