Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

You cannot imagine the joy of hearing Johnny Depp has signed on for a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean! Aye! I know, I know. Some of you quickly tired of Parts Two and Three, but not me. Of course nothing has topped the original, but why not try? There are far worse ways to spend money in Hollyweird. Savvy?

Friday night we watched the hopefully last installment of the Raiders’ flicks, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. While I enjoyed some of the special effects, I thought the premise was ridiculous. Even my husband and son, who are far more inclined to do the sci-fi or alien gig than I am, decided it was a cheesy story. And since story rules, it was an easily forgettable film which won’t warrant another viewing. It was severely inferior to the first and third episodes and probably even finished behind the second installment which no one I know liked very much.

On the other hand, last week we watched Iron Man and found it to be quite entertaining, a lot of that due to Robert Downey Jr.’s interpretation of the role. It had all its necessary parts: a noble endeavor, a wicked villain in disguise, a hopeless situation, a valiant fight, and a perfect resolution. Great contemporary fantasy, right?

Anyway, it’ll be fascinating to see where Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot take the pirates next—hoping they’re on board for this film journey.

Father, thank you for entertainment. I wish more of it would declare your glory . . . in the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Sorry you didn’t like Indiana Jones. I think “easily forgettable” probably sums it up pretty well. Although I think I’m pre-disposed to like Harrison Ford in the same way you’re pre-disposed to like Johnny Depp.
I agree that Iron Man was terrific!

I enjoy Harrison Ford, especially in this signature role, but I think there were a few scenes (the final one definitely) which did him a disservice. Really not his best performance.
With Johnny I doubt I’d be such a fan if God hadn’t put him so strongly in my heart. I’ll excuse things in him that I won’t for others because of what the Lord showed me. I mean, I’d definitely admire his acting skills–I put him in a class with my other favorite legend: Paul Newman. But I love the guy because of the Lord’s love for him. Not everyone gets that, I know.

I haven’t seen the new Raiders or the Iron Man yet, but my brother saw the latter in theaters three times! He never does that! Thanks for the info about the new Pirates – you’re the first to mention it to me.

I’m surprised the Pirates announcement hasn’t gotten more exposure. Maybe it’s because JD is the only one who’s officially signed on to, I believe, the tune of $31 million which could restrict who joins the cast. Iron Man far exceeded the new Raiders’ flick.
