Christmas Songs

Christmas carols . . . Jesus is the Reason for the Season . . . I love Christmas.

I have a morning ritual which involves my daily Coca Cola. Never mind why I go to the corner gas station to get it with ice instead of using my own ice and ready supply of Coke in the refrigerator. Irrelevant. Anyway, as I was on my way Sunday morning before church, an Amy Grant Christmas song came on the radio. I’m not a big fan of Amy Grant, but I appreciate that she has done some great songs. This particular song is one of them. I’m not sure if the title is “Emanuel, God with Us”, but that’s the repeated refrain. My goodness. I was straining not to weep since I had to go into the gas station and greet one of the regular cashiers.

There’s something about certain Christmas songs that touches me where the Spirit resides. And for me that touch results in weeping. The gratitude I feel for Jesus is overwhelming. Inexpressible any other way but in sold out tears.

How ‘bout you? Any favorite Christmas songs that choke you up, stir you emotionally and spiritually?

Here are a few of my favorites:

“Mary, Did You Know?” especially by Michael English

“O Holy Night”

“What Child Is This?”

“Emanuel, God with Us” by Amy Grant

“O Come, O Come Immanuel”

“Good King Wenceslas (sp.?)” (The lyrics are fantastic, but the song is rarely sung/recorded.)

“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”

Father, this can be a hurting time of the year for lost souls. Help me to be able to tell someone about your Son. His beauty should be known by all, and there’s no better time to proclaim the Christ in Christmas. Thank you, Jesus, Amen.

    I love those same songs as well as Sweet Little Jesus Boy and I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

    Depends on the version. I used to hate God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, or Christmas songs in a minor key in general. Then I heard MercyMe’s version of it, and thought it was one of the greatest Christmas songs ever.
    O Holy Night is my favorite of all time.

    I’m glad I’m not the only one who tears up in such circumstances, Nicole. BTW, I think I know which Amy Grant song you’re talking about. I have a Christmas tape of hers and there is an Emanuel song on there that is so majestic!
    When I was a kid, I loved “We Three Kings” and “Little Drummer Boy.” I think now it was because those songs tell stories. 😉
    For the music, I love “O Holy Night.” Good words, too, as are many of the traditional carols. I’d be hard pressed to come up with a favorite.
    One of my Christmas traditions is to get a new Christmas CD (used to be tape) each year. I’ve acquired some great music that way … and some not so great, too! 😮

    Michael is my all time favorite singer and I also love Mary Did YOu Know, Let’s Make the Baby King, O Holy Night, Silent Night, and Go Tell It on the Mountain all by Michael of course. Amy Grant is an excellent singer also…she has quite a voice.
    Oh, and do I cry…all the time.

    Mark, your favorite is that of many. Beautiful song. Glad you like “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” now, too. (Love Mercy Me, too.)
    Becky, Christmas songs do me in emotionally and spiritually, that’s for sure. Yes: love “We Three Kings” and “Go Tell It on the Mountain”. Can’t pick a favorite for sure. I used to love “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear”, too. Well, still do.
