Into the Fire

I say: let’s hear it for sagas. Oh, I know. Some of you dread the thought of tackling long novels. It’s okay. Not that I can truly understand your viewpoint unless of course the story drags or nags or sags.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy the typical sized novel of 300 or more pages because some of them rate very high in the well-written department. Just not my favorite because in spite of being well-written, if a writer is limited to 100,000 words, there will be a “clipped” feel to either the characters or the plot, and by “clipped” I mean a bit reminiscent of a short story. Going back as far as I can remember, I have never enjoyed short stories. Understand that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the skills it takes to write good ones.

And, hey, let’s face it: sagas aren’t going to get you published. I have five completed novels waiting for publication. The longest happens to be my favorite of those which remain and it chugs in at 169,000+ words. I love the characters and how their lives intersect with their backgrounds/history woven into the day-to-day events.
