Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Frequently misspelled words. Sorry but they bug me!

Definitely: often spelled definately

Independent: often spelled independant

And these annoying occurrences:

There: a location for their: belonging to them; or vice versa

It’s meaning it is for its meaning belonging to it; or vice versa

You’re: a contraction for you are used as your meaning belonging to you

These are common and too frequent mistakes.

I’m sure you must have more.

Feel free to vent.

Lord, we are not fault free. Help us to the best we can be in this flesh. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I particularly fall prey to the “it’s” problem. I have always been meticulous about accuracy and detail–genetically programmed, I think, because it’s something you need if you work as an Admin Asst.
But as I have gotten older and my eyes worse, I miss mistakes that I never would have missed several years ago and it annoys me very greatly.
Thank God for writer friends who help you track these down!

Yes. I can read over the same mistake a number of times and not catch it because I’m so familiar with the text, and I’m looking for other things. But when we get a published novel with assorted mistakes, it irritates me.

A tip if I may Brenda: It’s is always a contraction. In other words it’s always short for “it is”. Never used for possesive. Used to get me often.
