Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

I love Christmas. Giving is my gig. Buying presents is incredibly fun for me. This year I’m giving several books for gifts. How ‘bout you?

Five novels, two non-fiction.

If you know people who enjoy reading, a book is a wonderful gift. If you know what they like to read, it makes shopping for them a breeze.

Any books on your list to give or to receive?

Lord, we give because you give. Let us give with the right motives and with joy to those who need more than we do. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I believe books are one of the best gifts. This year I have a boxful of books (including The Famous One) that have been written by friends. That makes it more special.

Very cool to have that many books ready to give. (And you know how grateful I am to have mine among them, Brenda. Thank you.)

What to leave off my wish list: War and Peace
I have never before listened to fiction on audio book before, and I decided to start with War and Peace (go ahead, I was thinking that too 8-). Well, I’m up to chapter 20 and so far all anyone has done is eat or sit in a parlor or ballroom and…talk. LOTS and LOTS of talk.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that whoever the reader is on the CDs does an awesome job of reading the work.
If they would at least kill someone in the parlor so that something would happen….

I’ve never listened to an audio book either, Brenda, but I think it might be cool with a good and appropriate reader. I might like to do one with a book I’ve already read–like one of Vince Flynn’s.
Yeah, some of the old classics reveal so much through character study conversation. I think I’m a throwback to those days sometimes. If the conversation is revealing, it can be amazing, but for the adrenaline/action junkies, it can be gut-twisting.

Oh yes, you can hear the moments of humor, the slow character building and relate these character’s actions to the superficialities of people in the present day. No doubt about it. All the same, I know I’ll never attempt the paper version. LOL!
