Au Contraire

 

"On the contrary". I'm sometimes there. Contrary to what's "accepted". But not just to be contrary.

Not into debating issues. Will absolutely stand up for what I believe to be true, for what I know is true, and even for what I know is right even when it's contrary to political correctness or publishing correctness.

Some people love to examine every facet of issues. Analyze every side to discover the validity, if any, to the claims. I analyze but not to the enth degree. Some things stand out as right or wrong and need little studying while others require far more attention due to the devil in the details.

Do you like to play "the devil's advocate" in a discussion? Do you enjoy presenting an opposite opinion just to spark conversation? Do you prefer to engage in controversy on the blogs? What, if anything, will cause you to engage the opposition?

Father, you created us with different strengths and we all have weaknesses in our sin nature. Lord, give me the strength to honor you in my disagreements with others. Help me to be the one you want me to be. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

    Devil’s advocate in moderation. Or at least that’s how I perceive myself. I love thoughtful discussions like we have here and on some other blog sites.
    And to be honest, a scientist would find writers a fascinating group to study. I’m no scientist, but I certainly do find those in the writing occupation fascinating to study. Take for example the current hoopla about Amazon Prime and the Kindle lending library. I’m reading and learning about all sides of the issue, but in my mind I’m thinking “What’s the big deal? You aren’t getting compensated every time someone borrows a book from the library are you?”
    Or Mike Duran’s current post that discusses guilt and writers–I wonder how many other professions drive themselves insane trying to meet impossible demands to do everything from writing to online presence and marketing at 500% (ie not humanly possible).
    So naturally, an occupational environment like that invites LOTS of debate, which I do enjoy selectively particpating in. It helps me to learn and to grow.

    I usually only take the “devil’s advocate” role when I understand the motive of the opposite opinion or when I’m abivalent about the outcome. Debating issues is not my forte and rarely do I see these which don’t become un-civil even on writing issues.
