Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

What amazes you? The ridiculous lies of politicians? The flags in New Jersey at half-mast for Whitney Houston's funeral? The salaries of professional athletes?

Does anything make your jaw drop anymore?

Do you write stories to "amaze"? Do you want your words to amaze? What do you do that either secretly or overtly you wish someone would label "amazing"?

What amazes you? Anything?

Father, you're amazing. That you can love us in spite of us. That you can forgive the atrocities of sin. That you never change. That you're perfection, truth, love, the way to eternal life . . . Amazing. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

    I’m amazed…
That despite centuries of history to draw from, the human race is amazingly unable to use history to predict the future.
That it NEVER fails–every time you’re at the office trying to prepare to leave for vacation, four times the people dump stuff in your lap the week before.
At the greed of individuals in all walks of life.
At the lack of common sense exercised in business decisions made–decrying budget woes in one breath while wasting tons of money in the next.
At how long the Five-0 powers-that-be tenaciously clung to the throw-away character of Lori Weston, when even a deaf and blind and completely insensible person could recognize how she sabotaged the entire team dynamic (unless you’re a man who only watches because she has a bigger chest than Kono).
At the amazing, amazing, creation of God’s hand that I get to see every day in Arizona, and in other places that I visit. The beauty and diversity of our created world is too wonderful to comprehend.
…and thankful, that God doesn’t get tired of me despite my whining and say “Enough! I’m done with you!”

Excellent list, Brenda. I agree on all counts except not so emphatically about Lori Weston’s character. 😉

Let’s put it this way. If Weston was a character in a book, any good editor would have her deleted because she serves no purpose for the story and have her few contributions assigned to other characters in the book. And the book would be better for it.

I guess that’s where I differ from most. I like extraneous characters that only slightly contribute. I liked that they hinted at her attraction to Steve but chose not to use it. I like that she worked hard to fit in and gained their respect. Her exit won’t hurt but in the way the writers used her I don’t think her entrance hurt those episodes. Same with me in novels. Unless a character is utterly pointless with no appeal whatsoever, I’m glad for the variety, diversion, unique flavor I guess.
