Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Hey, I'm all for nursing babies. Not for bare-breasted in public feedings so that any and all can see and hear the slurping, sucking sounds of hungry infants. But if you've seen the upcoming cover of TIME magazine, this is just not right. I don't care. It's. Just. Not. Right. No. That's no "toddler".

It's your life. Raise your family how you choose. But public viewings of oversized kids sucking on your breast? Please don't.

Father, I'm desperate for you. In the Name of Jesus.

That’s just ridiculous. Kid’s gonna be messed up. I know women breastfeed longer in some other cultures, but I think it’s out of necessity. If they had a choice, they’d stop earlier I bet. Anyway, it’s an accepted convention within their society. All the moms/kids do it, so no kid is going to point to the other kid and derisively call him/her “Milkman” (i.e., the protag in Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison).

Can you imagine him as a teenager? Just sayin’. When your picture is available for all to see? How could she do this to her son?

Photo shoots don’t take a few seconds either. And there’s an audience.
Definitely stretches the definition of toddler.

I’m pretty sure he’s going to be a boob man when he grows up. Unless the memory of sucking on his mother’s breasts completely turns him the other way. Sorry, but if they can remember it, they’re too old. Actually my rule was, if they have teeth, forget it, although I never made it that far so it never became an issue.

That’s the truth, Dayle. Which makes it even more . . .
Yeah, might go the other way too. I think it’s appalling and sad for him. I really do.

As a mother who breastfed 2 of 3 for 3 years this cover disgusts me! This is not what breastfeeding is about. My daughters never lifted my shirt and sucked on my breast in public. I am so appalled at what TIME is portraying. My blog post about this is here http://frommipov.blogspot.com/2012/05/time-breastfeeding-really.html

Andi, I’m appalled at what this mother is doing. I’m on my way to your post, Andi.
