Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Write-a-book2

I'm prone to write a lot of description because I want my readers to see my characters, physically and in actions, both subtle and overt. I want them to feel like they're reading a movie. This is my style.

Others write with a staccato beat, sharp and quick. Brandilyn Collins with her Seatbelt Suspense comes to mind.

Some write with adrenaline surged into words. Robert Liparulo thrillers for example.

Others write sparse, almost sterile. Of course Hemingway comes to mind. I've never understood why people admire his writing, although I do think he was a good storyteller.

If done well, I can appreciate lots of picture painting in literature. It aids my visual renditions of the story, and I love to view the words come alive in mental pictures.

I've joked about my writing style and called it "street literary" because it can be briefly coarse where needed but I love to play with word images, make them pretty or meaty. Who knows if I succeed . . .

I guess I've happened upon a new phrase for my writing: "Raw, Romantic, Redemptive". Yeah.

How do you write? Describe it.

Lord, thank you for my life, who you created me to be. I'm still working to get there in need of so much improvement. I'm grateful for the passion, but it does tend to hurt. Deeply. I think I'm most like you then. Thank you so much. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

    “Raw, Romantic, Redemptive”
That’s a good choice for you. I can see it splashed across the top of your home page.

Unfortunately that’s a question that I’m still trying to answer for myself, I think because I’ve had difficulty defining what I want my style to be.
Generally speaking, for writers of any genre, it’s a good idea to write in such a way that the reader is reading a movie–especially given modern day attention spans. But I have a hard time writing that way because I was never much of a movie watcher to begin with.
I also love pages and pages of flowing description (Zane Grey was the master at this–putting you right there in the midst of the moment where you can feel, smell and see every detail). But that too, is not my forte.
In short, I haven’t figured out what my forte is, or maybe just haven’t learned to recognize it.
But if I had to choose 3 words that I’d want to use to describe my writing more thematically, I’d say “Integrity, Independence, Impact.”

Wow. Like those three words very much, B.
“. . . or maybe just haven’t learned to recognize it.”
I suspect this is the case. I think your style is being defined in this brief evaluation by what it isn’t. You can see that clearly enough. The three words above describe how you want your style to be perceived. And no doubt with such a powerful mission, it will be. I know how you research your material. But, now, if you can, give me three more words which describe the storytelling, not its mission.

I seem to flip between funny and serious. I’m either writing humor/satire, or I’m writing something rather dark. I haven’t decided what that means yet.
I will change up my writing style to reflect the mood of the piece. My current WIP is humorous and the main character is a rambler, so I’m having fun writing silly run-on sentences. But I’m also a fan of stark prose. I can appreciate Hemmingway for this aspect.
It’s all about creating a mood.
Anyway, I picked a mascot for my serious/humorous mix. He’s in the header of my website (which I have not integrated with my blog yet…one of these days.)

Makes sense, Jess. Sounds like you’re a genre-jumper. You know what they say about “those”. Ha. Let ’em say it. I say write what’s on your heart and give it your all. Got three words for me?

All this thinking is making my head hurt. 😎 It’s actually difficult for me to separate the storytelling from it’s mission.
But now you’ve got me determined to keep working on this till I identify it. Action, direct, uncluttered.
Yeah I know. Those words don’t help me either.

Three words might not capture yours, B. How ’bout “Uncluttered action with direct impact”?
And if more specifics are needed, “Westerns with uncluttered action and direct impact.” Not sure if it should be “Historicals” or “Westerns”?
Uncluttered tells me a lot as does “action”.
