Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

As a writer, most of us need a little affirmation. Some of us need a lot. However, those compliments and affirmation often play directly into how we feel about ourselves as writers – depending on who gives them to us. If we hope to be published, we have to sell all kinds of people on what we write. Sometimes those to whom we aim our writing don't see it unless we figure out how to connect with them. In other words, sometimes along the strange and unique roads to publishing, the obstacles can be multiple, confusing, and can lead us to empty places.

If you could receive the compliment about your writing, what would it be? Be honest.

Here's mine (for this week anyway):

"I'd read anything she writes."

Father, you know me. You provide what I need. No one else can do that. I'm desperate for you. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I started to sound all spiritual and say something like, “It was so profound it made me consider life in a way I haven’t in a long time.” but ….
The honest answer is much closer to yours. Something like, “I never heard of this guy before but I can’t wait to read more.”

I think the reasons behind our words would certainly read like your original spiritual assessment, Tim. I know when someone said to me with tears in her eyes about one of my novels, “You have no idea how much this ministered to me,” I lost it. Thank you, Jesus.

I always thought it would be the self-serving “brilliant” or “I’ve never looked at ____ that way”.
However, when people tell me they’ve cried after reading my story or when they keep talking about the characters, that meant the most to me because it means I made that world believable and in some way a story I made up evoked a good emotion in someone else.
My ultimate goal is for someone to tell me that they’ve gained a better understanding of the gospel.

Always love your honesty, Dayle. But I get your heart.

If, after reading one of my books, someone told me, “I finally know that I’m not alone” that would completely make my day. Knowing that someone identified with the situations in the novel tells me I got it right.
