Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

A common problem for writers and readers is the back up of books to be read. I'm so there right now. December was a very slow month for me. I dragged myself through one novel and now have several tapping at my subconscious reminding me that reviews are due in January. Usually I can close one novel, create a review, and move right along to the next. Not so recently and I have no idea why.

The last book I read with fervency was The Last Man by Vince Flynn. If you've ever read his novels, you know why it was no problem to dash through that story wishing I could slow it down because of the long wait for the next one.

Well, there are reviews coming in January. Let's hope I can do some steady reading starting now, and that any one of the coming TBR novels will inspire me to get back to my own writing. It's been too long . . .

Father, my schedule is in your hands, but I also need perseverance. I'm asking for your supply. Please. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

My TBR pile got worse this year. I usually have time to read about a dozen novels a year. This year, between fiction and nonfiction both, I only worked in a dozen (not counting the nonfiction you don’t fully read but skim for what’s pertinent to you).
We won’t even discuss how many unread books I have on my Kindle. LOL!
Largely it’s a time factor–my focus this year has been on regaining my health, and much of my reading, rather than books, has been articles related to that topic. And that alone is time consuming enough.
But honestly, I’m finding it hard to even consider giving a novel a try these days. I think I’ve just hit a point where my Polly Anna attitude toward giving novels a try has dried up. I get tired of seeking and not finding something sensational that really wows me. And much of the subject matter written about in most novels is of no interest to me.
Far worse than the reading though–I haven’t written a lick since June. Usually by this time in December I’m madly planning my writing goals for 2013 and how I will finish what projects, or at least get them under way.
This December? Nothing. Not even the least bit interested in attempting to establish writing goals for the new year. It’s really creepy.
But trying to force myself to write right now would be the equivalent of forcing myself to go be tortured at another day job. And there are enough tortures in life already, thank you very much. I’ll just have to ride it out.

Believe me, Brenda. I’m familiar with all the dry spells. I have to wait on the Lord. That’s all I can do. Considering you accomplished some amazing goals this soon-to-end year, I would keep on keepin’ on with what the Lord has for you right now. “Sha la la la la la, live for today.” Tomorrow has enough trouble of its own. 😉

It certaingly does. LOL! Though that reminds me of something else I need to deal with. A friend of mine sent me a revised novella she wrote asking for feedback. Considering the circumstances of my dry spell, I don’t think I should try and evaluate a work for feedback in this frame of mind. I need to write and tell her so.

Being that it’s a novella, IF you can squeeze it in, I’d give her the option of deciding whether or not she wants you to do it in your current “frame of mind”. Obviously she values your assessment. JMO.

I can relate, Nicole. I can usually read about 2 novels a week. This December I’ve completed 3. I guess other things have taken precedence over reading this year.
But now I have 2 library books that are due back by the 2nd, so I better get to it.

Yeah. I have no excuses, really. Just can’t get with the reading lately. But now I have to also. :/

I’ve got one library book I need to finish. Maybe 4 months back, some of the kids in my youth group mentioned the Percy Jackson books as favorites. That perked my ears up, b/c I’m not accustomed to kids mentioning books period, so I wanted to see what it was they liked so much.
I read the first in the series a month or two ago, and now I’m on book 2, which is “The Sea of Monsters”. The first book wasn’t particularly enthralling to me personally, but I can definitely see the appeal to kids–a child Greek god—lots of explosions and adventure. So I vowed to at least finish the 2nd book in the series, even if I don’t read the full series. And I’ve only got 2 weeks to get it read….
