Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

I don't envy authors adhering to deadlines. Having to make words come to life when our brains shriek "I'm done!" When creativity lies sleeping and the "Do Not Disturb" sign is posted on the doorknob of our mind. How can you write when you can't think of anything to say?

A story needs continuity and a fresh burst of words. All kinds of advice is given to break the drought in inventing those wonderful paragraphs that lead to chapters of incredible prose. Just write *%#! we're told. Something will miraculously morph into something redeemable, valuable, if you just keep at it. "It" might work for some – and must work for others – but I confess it doesn't work for me.

I've had to learn to wait on the Lord and to conquer my lack of discipline. Those two items are the only contributors to my writing history.

What do you do when you're forced to write . . . and no words show up?

Father, I'm desperate for you, for your inspiration, for your words to my pen. Thank you, Lord. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I’ve heard that “write anyway” advice so often I want to throw up. I understand that when you are under contract you have to produce–but I simply can’t force it. Maybe most people under contract are by that time more able to do that. Maybe it’s the “necessity is the mother of invention” stuff.
All I know is that not being published, I’m not under someone else’s deadline, and I can’t force the words to flow. I hope in time I WILL be able to. But I haven’t found anything that works yet.
I live a regularly scheduled, methodical life otherwise, but the writing just doesn’t want to fit into that kind of mold. Sigh.

So far I haven’t been in the position where I’ve been forced to write. I’m actually looking forward to the days when that will be an issue. 🙂

I can understand your desire, Bren. 😉
I’ll address being “under pressure” tomorrow.

One of my goals for 2013 is to build myself in some downtime (as opposed to my usual running screaming thru the day from the minute I get up till I collapse in bed at night).
MAYBE that’ll help loosen up the creativity and get words flowing again. To help toward that end, I found a really, really comfortable rocker recliner on clearance this holiday and I’m eagerly waiting to have it delivered on Saturday.
I’m hoping some time out of my desk chair will also get the ole thoughts flowing a little better too. But even if it doesn’t, I’ll finally have a comfy chair to rest my bones in. LOL!

    Hmmm…
    I freak out!
I don’t deal well with creative writing deadlines. Some things can’t be forced.

As much as some try, Jess, I agree.
