Looking back . . .

Most of us writers look for ways to correct things. Can it be said better? What word should I have used instead?

Do you ever go back and reread that novel you wrote four years ago? Are you editing it all over again?

If you had time to devote to the story you wrote, if you had time to let it settle, age, and ferment before you picked it up again, did you tear it apart, rewrite a few things, or smile in satisfaction as it required only a few re-touches?

There's a time to quit writing it. A time to let "The End" stand firm. A time to put it in the past and move on to the next story.

What do you see in your work when you look back?

 

Father, help us to be satisfied with the work of our hands, to give it due attention, our best efforts, and then to allow it to stand on its own as unique. Help us to do it all justice and then leave it. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

    It all depends on the work. I have far more edits in the book I’m working on now than I’ve had on other novels. But that’s because I’m changing the time line and that messes with the entire book. I’m certain this one will take several run-throughs to get it where I’m satisfied.
    As for other finished novels, I still tend to tinker with them. Sometimes it’s just a word, other’s maybe a new scene, but for the most part, I try to let them sleep.

    When we can finally put them to rest, it’s a good sign there are others to take their place in the present. We do tinker with those that went first when we happen upon them again – IF we happen upon them again.

    Well I haven’t written enough novels to have much experience, but I put my novel Principle Engagement away after it won it’s Genesis category a few years ago. Fortunately, I DO have time to let the story percolate. I know if I pulled it out today I’d think the same thing I thought when I put it away two years ago–I still have accomplished that “big” story feel yet. Until it does, it’s not going out into the world.
    That said, it’s still the story I feel strongest about. In time, it’ll be right where I want it. I just have to be patient and wait for the right timing.
