Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Music

Do you write to music? Or not? I prefer silence, but I have been known to listen to Chris Botti CDs while writing – especially if I want to capture true melancholy. I can't write to music with lyrics. I'll be singing along and totally distracted.

I know some authors put on all different kinds of music to write. Some choose specific kinds of music for specific kinds of scenes – from head-banging to classical.

And you?

Father, you've made us all so different, unique, and yet we are bound together by our humanity. Please continue to bless your writers, instruct them in your ways, and provide the inspiration they need on a daily basis to complete your will for them. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I have to have complete silence. I know plenty of people who write to music and I don’t know how they do it. It is just a major distraction for me–I’ve actually tried it once or twice but it was a no-go. Gotta have complete quiet.

Definitely prefer silence, Brenda. But Chris’s instrumentals do work for me occasionally.

Absolutely no music. If there’s music, I’m singing or humming along, and I get nothing written. I need complete silence.

That would be me too most of the time. When the guys are watching a movie, I need my shooting ear muffs to write. 😉
