Beach reading

So. Summer is a ways away – especially for those of us who are climate-challenged this spring. Nevertheless, summer reading is often casually referred to as "beach reads" and tends to give liberties to guilty pleasures in the novel department. Do you indulge guilty pleasures in the sunshine and warm temperatures? A ludicrous question for Hawaiian and Floridian natives but not so much for the rest of the country which truly experiences seasonal weather . . .

For me, I'll read any of my regular selections at any time during any season and don't reserve summer for "guilty pleasures". In fact, I don't feel guilty about anything I read. Is that a bad thing?

How about you? Are you looking forward to specific summer reading genres? Do you entertain yourself with the lighter "beach reads"?

Father, thank you for all kinds of reading pleasures. May we honor you with our reading and writing pleasures. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Like you, my reading choices don’t vary with the season. I might choose a lighter read after an intense one, but I typically enjoy a novel that challenges me.

I can’t say I ever feel guilty about the books I read, either. I like to vary between fiction and non-fiction, but I hope I love every one that I open.

Mark, how are ya? So good to hear from you.
I will say if I was so inclined (which I most definitely am NOT) to read something like 50 Shades of Grey, then I would feel guilty. But, no, I’m very selective in what I read and haven’t felt guilty since I was in college and read a novel some guy gave me called Boys and Girls Together. Horrible. Worst book I ever read.

Well, I still have a novel called “Breath of Life” on my to-read list and I plan on getting to that soon.
Otherwise, I confess, I am having difficulty finding books to read. I am overwhelmed by all the options, which creates a problem. For instance, I just purchased a novel that went on sale for 99 cents. Two chapters in, I’m finding the story okay, but the style is very choppy, and it’s grating on my nerves. So, I think to myself…”I only paid 99 cents for this, and I only have so much time. Should I finish this, or just find something else to read?” :/ At this rate, it’s likely I won’t read much over the summer, because my brain is tired of making decisions!

You’re sweet, Jess. You know, I have a busy reading May lined up – well, not terribly busy for me, but busy with several novels for review. I’ve lowered my reading volume because I think I’m finally getting to that place where I want to read stories I will truly enjoy and quit wasting my time on those I just endure or sorta like – because there are plenty of those. 2013 has ushered in the new and so far effective “Selective Reading” process. Long overdue in my case.

I’m not much of a ‘light reading’ type of girl but in any case, my choice of reading material doesn’t vary with the season.
Though I would like to increase my reading in 2013. But so far, time isn’t cooperating.

I don’t read a lot of “light” either, Brenda. Just once in awhile if I’m convinced the author is decent. You’re so busy, girl. I think you do all you can, but I hope for your enjoyment you can find the time you want to use for reading.

I’m not a beach read person… I just read what I want to. But every summer in late July, the read the entire Harry Potter series. So excited to dive back into that world in a few months!
