Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Number-5-hi

This Friday's Five arrives with thanks to Brenda Jackson (aka BKJackson) who mentioned how much noise(s) affected her. So. Let's do five noises that our ears don't tolerate well.

Jackhammers

High piercing feedback

Yapping dogs (I'm sorry because I really love dogs, but little yappers drive me nuts.)

The M-80's fireworks and upwards of those. Explosions in other words.

Over 100 decibel music in a tight environment - no matter how much I like the song, group, musician.

God, you've preserved my hearing thus far. Thank you for that because the beauty of sound is marvelous, precious, and just one sense which will be purified and improved by the perfection of heaven. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I think our list is pretty similar.
Agree on yapping dogs. I adore dogs–but I can’t deal with barking. Fortunately, each dog I have owned (large breed) has quickly learned that and I’ve had little problem with it. Other people’s dogs, however….
Ditto on music–while I’ve been known to crank up Peter Furler and/or the Newsboys in my car, I generally don’t attend concerts b/c the volume is too overwhelming. I’d rather spend the money on a CD and listen at my own selected volume.
Ditto on Fireworks–while it’s an American institution, especially at 4th of July, I can count on one hand with fingers left over the # of times I’ve attended a fireworks event. My ears just can’t take it.
Anyplace with too many overlapping auditory inputs—large crowd events, crowded noisy restaurants, etc.
High pitched noising and steady ceaseless noises (aka the before-mentioned dripping faucets, mechanical things like drills, etc. and my dog’s unique and irritating whine.
And one I’ve recently added to my list–I’ve always associated wind chimes with a soothing noise. However, living in an apartment where the people just 10 feet or so away have wind chimes hanging very near my bedroom window, I can tell you that wind chimes are not, in fact relaxing, but really quite irritating. Especially when you are trying to sleep! 😎

Yup. And although wind chimes can be soothing, they can also be just as irritating, I agree. Probably the Seahawks absolute crazy live noise is it for crowd noise for me. And it’s amazing.
I could add the sound of fierce upward of 40 MPH wind. That roar terrifies me.

Most sounds don’t bother my ears so much, but a few listed below stress me out.
The booming bass coming from the street behind us, that we can hear through closed windows.
The repetitive, clicking sound of people playing handheld games, or people who don’t turn the sound off their handheld games when in a public place.
    Noisy eating.
Loud restaurants or parties where you can’t understand the person sitting next to you, so you just smile & nod at everything they say 😉
Any sound at all when I’m trying to write. TV, radio, talking, music will all distract me.

Good ones, Bren. Yes, right on with booming bass – for me, it’s from the cars driving by, and we’re down a ways from the road with pasture and trees in between but it still permeates the house. Ditto on the games period. When it’s too loud to converse, yeah. And I’ve found the only music I can actually write to is Chris Botti’s. Beyond that, I’m much too easily distracted by words I can decipher from other mediums.
