Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

So I'm no fan of fantasy and chick lit and "sweet little romances". Of what kind of novels are you no fan?

Father, you give such creative freedom to writers. May mine be pleasing to you. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I would say pretty much anything but non-romance historical and suspense but that’s not strictly true. Occasionally I’ll read a contemporary novel that I can’t put into a category that I like.
There’s the classics of old–animal books I can’t classify such as Black Beauty, Misty of Chincoteague, etc.
I read the Hunger Games, where I first heard of the category of “dystopian fiction”. Great book, but I don’t think I’ve read anything in that category since.
While I don’t read fantasy as a rule, I have read the Percy Jackson books, which I assume fit into that category. As much as I loved Star Trek and to a lesser degree Stargate SG-1, I’m not a big fan of reading sci-fi (simply because nobody could ever top the threesome of Kirk, Spock and McCoy. It just can’t be done.)

Every now and then I make exceptions to my rules, but rarely. I should’ve added historicals to that list, but once in a great while I read one. I read the old classic animal books too, lots and lots of horse stories. Now I can’t read them without crying so I don’t. Thanks for your comment, Brenda. Appreciate you.

I’ll try pretty much anything–a well-written story can overcome any genre’s limitations. Still, unless I personally know the writer, I tend to stay away from sweet romances, cozy mysteries, & chick lit. Spec fiction, historicals, & historical romances are rarely at the top of my to-read piles, but I do enjoy them in moderation–they must have a complex story, and they need to challenging.

It makes a difference if I know the author too, Bren, but I don’t know why it’s so hard for me to read historicals. I grew up on westerns and loved them – but history in and of itself I’ve never liked. Not in school, not in fiction. Not at all. And I agree on the cozy mysteries, but I did enjoy Karin Kaufman’s two (The Witch Tree and Sparrow House). Thanks for your comment, Bren. Always appreciate you.
