Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Everybody has them. Nobody has to tell us that some are useless. But here are a few things where your opinion doesn't matter, but it's fun to give it anyway.

1. Do you think e-readers have become so popular because of the convenience factor or the price of books often being offered for free or cheaper than a print book?

2. Do you prefer reading a print book or an e-reader?

3. Do you think too many books are published each year?

4. Approximately how many books do you read in a year?

5. What is the proportion (in your reading) of novels to non-fiction?

Harmless opinions if you care to express yours.

Father, you've created some of us to be outspoken and others to be shy or withdrawn. We know your ability to love all kinds. And we know we need to love more and better. Only you can help us to do that. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

There are even more opinions out there than e-books. LOL!
    1. I don’t know about the rest of the world, but the U.S. has an obsession with gadgetry, so that’s part of the factor for e-readers. But it’s also the (usually) cheaper price, although I still think some publishers charge ridiculous amounts of money for books in e-format, and I leave them on the shelf. I love the dedicated e-readers (Kindle)
    2. Do you prefer reading a print book or an e-reader? Definitely prefer e-readers. I can carry around 500 books at any given time plus at my age, adjusting the print is a HUGE benefit. Only exception is some non-fic that has graphs and charts. I haven’t figured out how to overcome the obstacle of reading graphs & charts on a tiny e-reader screen, even with zoom.
    3. Do you think too many books are published each year? Hmmm….I’m not sure you can ever have too many books, though I certainly filter out 99.999999999999% of them. I suppose we could get into a moral and ethical argument here considering the nature of some books, but I still wouldn’t want to restrict the printing of books.
    4. Approximately how many books do you read in a year? Not as many as I’d like (that stupid work thing keeps getting in my way) 8-). A couple dozen, mix of fiction/non-fiction.
    5. What is the proportion (in your reading) of novels to non-fiction? 15% fiction to 85% non fiction, at least.
Looking forward to hearing from others on this.

Thanks for taking the time, Brenda. I doubt we’ll hear from many, but let me give you my responses.
I think it’s a combo of convenience, price, and gadgetry. Good point on the electronic gadgetry.
I prefer print books. Easier for me to go back and reread a particular part/page, and I like holding a book. Old school.
I wouldn’t want to limit the amount of books published either, but, yes, I do. Walking in a bookstore is a fantastical experience. How can there be so many books?! Add to those the ebooks which aren’t in print . . . wow.
In the past I read a huge number (for me anyway) until they started feeling stale and uninspiring. I’ve cut way back to about two a month – and not even that in the past couple of months.
    Proportionately, I read 98/2 percent fiction/non-fiction.

Good points about US being obsessed with gadgets. I think convenience is the biggest reason e-readers are popular. Anyone I talk to, that’s there reason.
Give me a print book any day. I only go to my Kindle when I’m out of print books. Even with my Kindle, I created a book cover for it so that when I’m reading, it feels like an actual book.
I don’t know if too many books are published, but I do believe that too many of the same type of books are published. The lack of variety–especially in the CBA–is sad.
I went to Goodreads to check the number of books–over 100 each year for the past 4 years. Oh my …
Like you, Nicole, my fiction/non-fiction ratio is probably 98/2. I’ll start non-fiction books, but find them easy to put down.

Thanks, Bren. Definitely agree with the non-fiction assessment. I have several I never finished and more that I never started. 😉
