What does sybolism mean to you? Do you look for it in the fiction you read. Do you use it in your stories? Do you prefer metaphors and similes to sybolism? Do you enjoy being challenged with symbolism? Can you think of an author who uses it successfully?

Father, you're the Master of symbolism and reality. Truth in all cases. Help me to portray the truth in fiction. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

As a literature major, looking for symbolism was forever embedded in my head, but I try to ignore it and just read for story sake now. I do like a periodic metaphor and/or simile, but they have to be organic to the story, they have to fit the characters and the situation, and they can’t be overused.

Good assessments, Bren. I enjoy symbolism when it isn’t so obscure you need a PhD to discover it. I also like the double entendres, especially in titles. Love good metaphors and similes – like you, I think they have to fit.
