Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

 Free-write

How do you write? Pad and pencil or pen? Computer keyboard? Do you begin with a storyboard or notebooks?

What style do you like? Do you write the way you speak? Do you write first person? Third person? All the other persons?

Do you emulate your favorite writers? Do you have your own voice perfected or does it change and rotate through different stories and over time?

How do you write? How do you want to write?

Father, help each one of us who you've designed to write to be effective in our endeavors. Help us to fulfill what you have for us to do. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I would LOVE to write like Zane Grey, but that’ll never happen, unfortunately.
Interesting question about whether I write the way I speak. I yak a lot in print–like on forums like this, but like my Dad, I never have too much to say in person. In any case, I’d venture to say I don’t write like I speak–primarily because I’m writing in a completely different era of time.
I don’t think I’ve discovered my voice yet. You’ve got to write more novels than I have before that becomes evident. But the practice is always fun! 😎

I think you’ve discovered your present voice, Brenda. Although it might morph into something a little different, I don’t think you write a novel or two without establishing voice. I’m willing to bet your writing voice suits your genre, and I would guess it’s probably a darn good one.

How do I write? Typically at the computer keyboard, but I do lots of prewriting while driving or walking. I also jot notes whenever a phrase or scene hits me–and I tend to leave those notes all around the house.
Style? Third person is my favorite. I enjoy a well-written first person, but that’s harder for an author to pull off without the protag looking selfish.
Voice? Ughh. I’m working on regaining the voice I had when I first wrote. All these years of critiquing & editing have neutered it. If I could write like Francine Rivers in her Mark of the Lion series, I’d be thrilled.

I’m glad you’re trying to rediscover your original voice, Bren. Although those who “get” you and understand writing can be helpful and beneficial, there is a tendency to mold a voice to a preference. It’s human nature as a writer. Go back and get it, Bren. No doubt it’s the best one for you.
I love Frank Peretti, personally. I’d mesh several authors if I could.
