Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

In an earlier post I complained about the recent TV series Castle. Although I still believe that actors Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic who play writer Richard Castle and Detective Kate Beckett respectively have little pop in their romantic chemistry, they've settled into a workable marriage that demonstrates their love for one another. In my former post I wondered if the series had lost its appeal, the episodes less than satisfying. The exception to that, and the indication that the series still has it, are the past two-part episodes concluded Monday evening.

A wicked serial killer, thought possibly dead from being shot during an attack on Castle and Beckett, surfaces under a fake name with an equally evil plastic surgeon for his girlfriend who was suspected of being involved in crimes but without concrete proof. Their objective rests in getting to both Castle and Beckett and causing them incalculable pain.

The two-part story gave credence to the type of serial killers presented in The Patrick Bower Files. Intelligent, obsessive, organized, and compelled to do evil without feeling a hint of remorse, the two pair up to commit their evil deeds.

With proper escalating tension the writers take the viewers on a tedious search for these two killers with Castle's and Beckett's lives in the balance. These episodes remind me the show still has something left to give. Using the police procedural method of solving the crime with those outside-the-box Castle ideas to help work the frustrating circumstances, finally success is achieved with the ultimate relief and satisfaction.

So. The series still has some life left to it with two of their best episodes ever airing this last two weeks. Well done.

Father, may those who've used your gifts well acknowledge you as the source. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Those last two episodes were intense, weren’t they? I thought of the Patrick Bowers series too.
You know, I actually think the show is still working because of the lack of chemistry between Beckett & Castle. Wanting them to get together was never the desire–was never the reason I watch Castle. I watch it mainly because Fillion is brilliant. He brings such life to his character, no matter the circumstances.

I would agree Fillion plays his role to perfection, no matter how annoying his metrosexual ways. I thought Castle was heroic and ultra-clever in the second part of these episodes.
You make an interesting point about their lack of chemistry actually working for the series. Of course I always wanted them to get together because I hate unrequited love. 😉

I too enjoyed these last two episodes. I love suspense. I had previously enjoyed the suspense surrounding the murder of Kate’s mom, but that’s all been wrapped up. Until the last two weeks I hadn’t enjoyed many of the episodes this season. However I do feel that the quality of acting of the men playing the cops who work for Beckett has improved this season.

I’m with you, Debra. These last two episodes have brought life back to the series. I think the serious episodes are far more interesting than the silly ones. I’ve always enjoyed the other two detectives and Lainie (sp.?).

I’ve loved the relationship between Castle and Beckett. Instead of using the tired trope of keeping the attracted people apart until the end, their relationship is one of the most normal on TV, in the extreme world they exist in, of course.
I’ve never had any trouble with the chemistry.
And, these last two episodes were just good television. Where the mystery of the week thing can be a diversion, they do a great job with these darker ones with larger threats. That’s where they have excelled throughout the series.

Thank you for your comments, Pete. I would agree their relationship has morphed into a normalcy, and I too am glad the powers-that-be didn’t wait until the end of the series to get them together. I also agree they’ve done a great job with the darker episodes. Personally, I’m still waiting for the revelation of Castle’s missing weeks.
