Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

One of these days our family will be moving to a new home in a city just southeast of our current location. We're familiar with our new area having attended church there several years ago, and we have friends we've known for many years who live there.

Change is in the air. Leaving our home of over 30 years will be somewhat of a shock when it all finally becomes a reality. There will be mixed emotions, some melancholy I suspect, but ultimately it will be a welcome change because we will be moving to the country since we are now surrounded by urban development in what used to be an unincorporated rural area.

I'm generally not fond of change. This is a necessity, and I do welcome it. From the emotional standpoint it will be hard to say goodbye. We have buried three horses, two dogs, and one cat here. Memories collected for this many years will not be abandoned even when this house is torn down to make way for an apartment complex. Relationships with our neighbors will be sustained from different locations, but our friends behind us have made an offer on a home about two miles away from ours!

Anyway, the blog may be irregular and undependable now and then leading up to, during, and after the move. We could use your prayers for a quick turnaround with technical "stuff" – and everything else that comes with a major relocation. Thank you for your faithfulness in sharing this blog with me. I hope to continue to offer cool things to look at, read, and ponder. I look forward to hearing your thoughts whenever you're moved to give them.

For the time being, we will proceed . . .

Father, thank you for all of this. It's not easy, but it's a gift from you, and we're so grateful for it. Words always fall short when it comes to you. Thank you is never enough, but I offer it from my heart. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I don’t know if you and your husband consider yourselves collectors of “stuff”, but if you haven’t already, start going through and ditching stuff. Even if you’re not a stuff collector, you’ll be amazed how much piles up anyway in 30 years. About 5 or so years back, I was moving into a new apartment from one I’d live in for 14 years. Just an apartment! And though I’m not a gatherer of stuff, I still had a lot to wade through. UGH!
That was so traumatic I’ve been even more careful about not acquiring ‘stuff’.
I’m waiting to see if I will have to move yet again this year. I LOVE my apartment–best I’ve ever had, but it’s too expensive and my number one goal in life is to get away from the employer from hell and reclaim my mornings–which means taking a low paying job and getting a place where the rent is lower (preferably not in the police fly-over district–been there, done that). I’m also looking to see if buying is an option. Don’t have any answers yet.
Anyway, best wishes in your preparations to move. My first 2 moves were easy–everything I owned fit in my car when I moved from MD to NC and then from NC to AZ. But the other two moves not so easy. Fortunately I found an awesome moving company to help me both times.

Your moving tips are right on, Brenda. We’ve given over 20 boxes, some furniture, and misc. bags of that “stuff” to charity so far and still working on it. Fortunately, our new home was built with lots of storage areas – so hopefully THIS time, even though there’s room, we’ll be less likely to keep the stuff we never seem to use no matter how valuable and useful it seems.
When we lived and worked at the track, everything we owned was transported in our old International Travelall. That stopped when we bought our home and didn’t travel with the track.
Thanks for the best wishes. It’ll be a chore, but we’re determined to do it. Have a moving company lined up, and they’ve been wonderfully flexible as the date has changed three times already. Can’t be helped.

Such a nervous and fun and sad and busy time! I know it’ll be hard, but you’ll love your new place. Will it have one of those cool kitchens you’ve been sharing? I’ll be praying that this transition goes smoothly for you.
