Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

It's a great time for those who love to write and are committed to producing decent literature – and, let's face it, for those who aren't as well. The truth is there are unlimited opportunities for ambitious writers in today's arena of publishing. The various e-readers have opened up a huge new venue for independent writers who no longer want to wait years to become an author and recognize their dreams of being published. They can simply do it themselves.

Determined and talented writers have independently published their work for the electronic readers and handle everything from start to finished productions of their books for the gamut of e-reading devices and can even orchestrate their print books. Those who choose not to go the independent route but pursue traditional publishing can wait and see if they're accepted into that club knowing if they get enough rejections, they can still go indie.

I prefer to hire someone else to format and design my covers with my suggestions, input, and final approvals. That's what works for me, but I know many authors who do it all themselves. I admire them, but I'm grateful for those who perform the service for those of us who don't want to handle all the details of publishing.

It's a very good time to be an author because of the unlimited possibilities to get one's work published. And it's about time.

Father, thank you for the opportunity to write and publish the stories you've given me. I'm so grateful for all of it. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

You’re very right. It is a good time to be an author, especially those who choose not to go the traditional route. As for those who are striving for traditional publication, particularly with one of the big-name publishers, it’s far more difficult, and chances are, the road will be much longer.
But for those who choose to go indie, it’s a very good time to be an author. There are many options available for editing, covers, formatting, etc, plus indie authors are more than eager to share their knowledge. The problem with indie-publishing is the marketing as you are your marketing department. Not an easy task for the average, introverted author.

As I’ve understood it in recent years for the majority of new authors in traditional publishing the onus of the majority of marketing rested on their shoulders anyway. Since IMO traditional publishing hasn’t even now figured out how to market novels by new or relatively unknown authors, it’s hard to imagine how they figure those authors can come up with a foolproof plan for marketing their books. I readily admit I’m no marketer for my own work. I can publicize the work of others with abandon, but mine? Not so much. It’s not my gift either way. I’m absolutely no good at it. To expect me to somehow manufacture that skill is not practical or productive. I’m forced to rely on word of mouth which is a good thing but unreliable. Many readers never write reviews or use social media.
My childhood friend who I hadn’t seen or talked to for close to 30 years decided to look me up on the internet. When she did, she found I wrote books and bought one of my novels. I had no idea because she didn’t write a review. When we had our reunion, I learned she’d read The Famous One and liked it and wanted to read more so I gave her two more of my books. (The three of us are meeting again today! Can’t wait.)
Marketing is a definite skill, an art form when done well. It’s not something I can do effectively for myself.

KT-T, this is right up your alley – when you get back to writing your novels.
