Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

A snapshot behind the series Magnum P. I., one of the best by Donald Bellisario. Definitely one of the superior series on network television.

Father, thank you for good entertainment, for the positive talents of those you've gifted with creative abilities for television and film. You are the impetus for every good thing, good moment, good, period. Thank you for your benevolence and grace. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I don’t remember which was on first, but I loved watching Magnum and Simon & Simon back to back on Thursday nights. Ah, the good days of television. The difference I find between TV then and TV now (although granted I watch very little of what’s on now) is that the shows from the 70’s and 80’s were genuinely memorable. Scenes will randomly pop into my mind with very little provocation; as will lines of dialogue.
The stuff I’ve seen in recent years just doesn’t have that capability. It’s far more forgettable.
I may not like old age, but at least I got to see the good stuff on television so there are perks to being older. 😎

Yes, Simon and Simon was good too. Magnum was special, memorable, and often touching. That same great writing has accompanied most of Bellisario’s other productions – especially his military series (JAG, NCIS,LA, and now New Orleans is improving).
