Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Five reasons I like certain characters:

Their emotions are evident without being theatrical.

They demonstrate a sensitivity – yes, even the male characters.

They're flawed and aware of it.

If they don't have faith in God, they're aware they don't have it all together.

They are unique in some way.

These are simplified and somewhat vague. What can you add from your own preferences?

Father, help me to create characters that set them apart and make them unique and readable, relatable, humanly weak/flawed, and seeking after you. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

They have to be relatable. If I can’t identify with them in some way, I’ll lose interest.
They have to be real. If I find myself rolling my eyes constantly, chances are they’re not coming across as authentic.

Humility, coupled with the fact that they are:
    Larger than life
    Excellent at what they do
    Vulnerable
    Not easily defeated
    Manage to surprise you
And I ditto Nicole’s emotion without theatrics

Both Brendas present excellent points, traits. I agree. “Larger than life” doesn’t have to mean like Mitch Rapp to me – because he is (and he’s possibly my all-time favorite character – at least in thrillers 😉 ) – (don’t you love all these dashes and parentheses?) – but sort of jumping off the page in their unique way – which also doesn’t have to be spectacular and in fact can be quite ordinary but something sets them apart. Ta Da : that sentence is over!

The main thing for me to like characters is what Brenda Anderson said, “They have to be real.”
One morning while praying, I almost brought up the names of some characters in the book I was reading!

I’ve done that, too, Debra, and characters in a series TV show! Silly us. Yes: authenticity is it when it comes to characters, agreed.
