This is a rant if there ever was one. What in the *%#&! happened to proofreading?! In all my years of reading printed material and now e-material, e-books, and e-everything, apparently public education has taken a huge toll on common language and typing skills. The errors are endless. Ridiculous mistakes, typos, misspellings, and every other egregious error possible is in evidence in books, print, posts, articles, magazines, newspapers, "professional" letters, media in general. Of all the jobs needed to produce professional material, a good proofreader should be worth his/her weight in gold. Unbelievable how many errors appear everywhere the written word is found. Read it again before you publish! 

And I hereby apologize for every single error I have missed in all of my posts or novels. I'm sorry for missing a mistake. No excuses!

 

Father, help me to be careful with the written word and the English language. Thank you for any skills you've given me. Apart from you, I can do nothing. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

    I wonder if its partly due to the fact that technology has given us the attention span of a gnat?

    Oh I add my frustration to yours. Yeah, I know how easy it is to make a mistake, so proofread it! I sometimes wonder why an author didn’t hire an editor, then I see a word of thanks to the editor so I don’t know what’s going on. I read a book last year that had the author’s last name misspelled on the spine. The number of errors on the inside was atrocious. Are we in too much of a hurry?

    My biggest frustration comes with big publishers who have an army of editors & proofreaders go over the book before it comes out. Let’s face it, we’re all human, and we all miss things, but when so many pairs of eyes look at a book, and you still find a flurry of mistakes? That’s a puzzle.

    I only know a few years back in the CBA there was a #s crunch and I think proofreaders were the easy targets to lay off. Why I have no idea since marketers really had no idea how to market fiction (I know: cruel and snarky). The editors no doubt got that duty added to their already pressed other messes and, voila, the result is less than stellar.
    I’m with all of you ladies. There’s just not one good reason for it considering all the complaining about self/indie publishing being “unprofessional” – in the past anyway.
