Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Five of the most unusual things in my life . . . (all before meeting the Lord Jesus Christ)

  1. After one full year of college, I decided to go to work and save my money to travel to Great Britain and Europe (hoping to meet actor David Hemmings of Michaelangelo Antonioni's film Blow Up). In London I found and called his agent, made an appointment, got invited to a party for a new singer he was introducing. After nearly three months of travel in Europe, my friend and I returned to London where we would be departing for home and I stopped by the agent's office to give him a small gift I'd bought in Florence, Italy. As I was waiting to see the agent, David Hemmings walked into the office and wished me Good Morning. I returned his greeting. Mission accomplished. Sort of.
  2. Also in London, before we left the states, I ordered tickets to see the stage performance of the very popular musical "Hair". We sat close to the front. After the performance, the cast members came out to the audience and invited many of us up on stage to dance to the music with them.
  3. One fall meet at Bay Meadows Racetrack in San Mateo, California, I was walking to the racetrack café and passed Bing Crosby who greeted me as he walked by.
  4. I once submitted a short story to "Vogue" magazine with a black and white self-portrait photograph. (It/I was rejected.)
  5. When we were in London, we met some American girls studying in Aix en Provence (France) who invited us to stay with them when we went to France which we did. We stayed in this duplex out in the beautiful countryside which reminded me of home with all the fall colors in the trees and the green grass surrounding the two story duplex. I made the mistake of wearing new high heels on our trip with them to Paris, Chartres, and the Palace at Versailles. Finally the blisters on the backs of my heels were so bad and painful, I had to carry my shoes on the train ride back to Paris and back to Aix. I managed to get many French laughs and finger-pointing from some Frenchmen.

Father, only you know our hearts. Thank you so much for rescuing me and changing mine. I'm always desperate for you, Lord, and grateful for all you've done in my life. Apart from you, I can do nothing. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

It’s true, Brenda. I do. I left out the part about almost dying in Aix – maybe another time. 😉 I reflected on what a great life the Lord has given me in spite of me.
