Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

A sign of those times. Great music but not without the touch of the wrong spirit in the lyrics. It was a hard time in this nation's history just as it is now. But the music was utterly sensational. God gifted some fabulous musicians and vocalists, but so many of them failed to acknowledge Him as the source of their incredible talent.

Father, every good and perfect gift comes down from you. Thank you for all of them. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

As a Christian with a love for Classic Rock, I think all things (including music) need to be placed in their proper context. We grew up with this music. It was the soundtrack to our lives and it was everywhere. It’s a reflection of simpler times, from the flower power of the hippy generation to the protests of the Vietnam War. To ignore it’s impact on our lives and the influence it had on us (for better or worse), is to downplay it’s importance in helping to make us who we are. God is here in the music, perhaps not in every song, but in many of them. Evil is in here too, but as more of a warning than as a lure. So, should we throw the baby out with the bath water? I don’t think so. God didn’t populate the world with Christians alone. He threw us all into the mix, and now here we are. I don’t feel guilty listening to the music that was the soundtrack for my life.

Excellent commentary, Ken. When I got saved, all of this music ceased to exist in my life. Having been influenced by the lyrics in these amazing songs, I chose to do some things I knew were wrong. I needed to immerse myself in the Lord’s rescue. Now I can listen to it all again and know I’m “safe”. I appreciate the immense talent given to so many of this era and grieve for those who refused Jesus.
