Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

           Excerpt

After speaking with the young woman, I took a few moments to survey the group huddling behind the tape and to inhale the familiar fragrant aroma of horses, listening to the whooshes of their nostrils, some of them pawing their hard rubber mats at the fronts of stalls wondering what all the commotion was about. Brought back memories of high school summers spent working at the track, of underage drinking and girls who liked taking their clothes off, guys who loved it when they did. Funny how some things never change.

Father, it's impossible to please everyone with my words and stories. My first goal is to please you. Please give me the courage to complete this novel after a long spell of being away from it. Thank you for all you do for me. Apart from you, I can do nothing. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I know the struggle, especially when family demands your time and domestic responsibilities will not wait another minute. I don’t know how other writers do it, but I have to specifically set that time aside when other demands are at their lowest. That usually means working the graveyard shift when my creativity is at it’s peak and the interruptions are practically nonexistent. With that said, I may also have to pay a high price in sleep. It’s all about creating a system that works for you and everyone else.

Bren, thank you so much. Means the world to me when it comes from you. Thank you.
Ken, solitude works for me whenever it’s there and I generally have a lot of it. For me, this one is particularly difficult because it’s my first attempt at a “mystery” or police procedural or whatever it is with the romance thread in place but not prominent. I’ve been stunted since, as you described, life intervened but mostly because I was afraid I couldn’t get it right. I’m going ahead in spite of my fears just to complete it since the idea was pressing me for literally years before one word of it was written. I have two others in various stages of progress, and if I can get this one finished, I have no doubt I can get them done too. This one will be the catalyst to getting back in a workable rhythm for me. The Lord has been patient with me, but I know I need to complete these.
