Friday Five

Five reasons why I hated 7th grade:

I got the worst haircut of my life in 7th grade. I wore a scarf over it for a few days. 

I started biting my fingernails in 7th grade because of the tension I felt. Never kicked the habit.

I was in an accelerated math class which I should not have been – probably the main reason for the nail biting.

Everyone wanted to grow up. I still wanted to be a kid.

I had no classes with my closest friends. 

 

Did you have a year of school you deemed the worst?

 

God, somehow you got me through those rough times without my knowledge of and reliance on your beloved Son. You've been so gracious to me my entire life in spite of me, patiently waiting for my heart to realize my need for Jesus. Thank you is never enough. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

    I’m impressed you can remember details from school. I can’t–it was so long ago!
    The two worst school experiences (cuz I can’t remember exactly what grade it was):
    Hands down the worst was first or second grade (whatever grade you’re in when you first start learning subtraction). I had a woman math teacher who traumatized me & I’ve suffered the consequences ever since. It’s divine intervention that I can’t remember her name because if I did remember her name I would locate her and give her a verbal thrashing she would never forget.
    2nd worst was either 7th or 8th grade–they put me in what they called “The Gifted & Talented Program”–all that means is they force you to read a bunch of incredibly BORING so called “classic” books. YOU never got to choose. I hated that with a passion and eventually got kicked out. If they want to help smart kids, they can surely find better ways to do it then that. I’ve instantly rejected anything anybody labels “classic” since then. I find that those books aren’t nearly so impressive as those attempted brainwashers wanted us to believe.
    Balancing that out, best years were 11th and 12th grade where I had good English classes and took drama. My favorite teacher, Keith Shaffer, was a very positive influence and thankfully I’ve had a chance to write him a thank you letter in my adult years because I know from that idiot math teacher that a good teacher makes all the difference.

    Oh, 7th grade… I certainly don’t recall the details you do, but I do know it was not my favorite year. I grew up in a small town, so we had (2) schools. Elementary was K-6 and High School was 7-12. When I made that move up to high school, all my friends from elementary deserted me, wouldn’t even talk to me. Never understood why. And 2 of my former best friends and I had ridden together to Bible studies, so that hurt worse. And, I’m afraid, that set the tone for my high school years.
    Oh the angst of those days! Too bad we can’t just skip right past them.

    Oh it was 2nd grade for sure.
    I had an unkind teacher.
    I had gotten eyeglasses that summer so I thought my vision would be forever perfect. When I could no longer see what was on the chalkboard, I thought it was the same for all the kids. My teacher angrily accused me of not following directions.
    2nd graders could optionally subscribe to The Weekly Reader. Money was especially tight that year so my mom opted to decline. My teacher told me she was unhappy about that and sent a note home saying I would be left out of various activities. My mom felt terrible and sent a check with me the next day.
    I had to work a bit to learn clock math and to add a column of 3 single-digit numbers.
    I didn’t immediately catch on to how to write a lower-case cursive f. I came home that day and burst into tears telling my mom that I was going to flunk 2nd grade.

    It’s interesting how school districts carve up the middle school years. I’m also from a very small town (population 66 at the time–it’s exploded to like a 100 people now. 😎 We had one elementary for K-6, the middle school was 7-8, then high school.
    And now it seems some schools lump 6th grade into middle school. There doesn’t seem to be rhyme or reason to how they choose.

    Could be! My mom and I ran into her when I was 19 or 20, and she had a genuine smile for us and acted like it was so great to see me “all grown up now”. That year definitely prepared me for having my own kids in school.

    The horrors of school! Traumatic enough that we still remember them. Truly, 7th grade was the worst. (We had K-6, Jr. High 7-9, High school 10-12 and I still believe this was/is the best for kids.) I sympathize with each of your experiences. Those second grade experiences can make it hard to proceed without fear!
