Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Five peculiar injuries:

My right pinkie finger: a horse kicked me and broke it at the knuckle sending the upper half of the finger pointing to the right at a 90 degree angle. It required surgery, and I remember the doctor cussing as he was trying to put all the pieces back together around the pin in it. Therapy didn't go well. The finger doesn't bend at the knuckle.

My middle toe on my right foot: Walking over to the saddling paddock with a filly, she startled and planted her foot on mine literally scraping off the tip of my toe through my shoe. I could feel it rattling around in my sock in my shoe after the race. We had to go to the ER and have the bone snipped and then the skin stitched over the top of my toe. The toenail is reduced in size but partially there.

My nose. In a pick-up softball game near Golden Gate Fields I got hit by a line drive to my nose. Needless to say, it broke my nose. I did this pirouette thing before I fell to my hands and knees as the blood gushed. The guy who hit it felt terrible. (I was the pitcher.)

My right calf. Something in the back of my calf (on the inside of my leg) snapped as I was running to the winner's circle after a race we won. After it snapped, it slithered down the inside back of my leg. I was lame and had to hobble with my weight on my toes for three weeks. Didn't go to the doctor for that one.

Lots of foot hurts from horses stepping on my feet over the years. They hurt! I bet X-rays of most racetrackers' feet would show remodeling from multiple breaks.

Father, you've protected me for so many years from so many things. Thank you is never enough. You've been so gracious to me. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

OW! Those all make me cringe!
I’ve been pretty fortunate most of my life to avoid any major snafus, up until 5-6 years ago with the rotator cuff injuries. Hope not to add anything else to the mix 😎

Yes, indeed, definitely ouches. And we hope to definitely not add to the totals! Did you have to have surgery?

Yes, and I don’t recommend it. But to be fair, not everyone has a bad outcome with surgery. Every person’s body is different.

I understand not recommending surgery – sometimes it works out great (i.e. my heart surgery) but sometimes not. Depends on the body as you said but also I think the surgeon/recommendations. Sometimes surgery is not the best option.
I remembered one more injury: I got bit in the face by a filly after I fed her. I was hanging her full water bucket and she lunged at me and caught me on the cheekbone with her front teeth. Yeah: ow! Bruised like a black eye.

    Those are peculiar. 🙂 Ouch!
I’ve been relatively injury free. As a teenager, we used to play on a friend’s homemade raft in the middle of a lake. I was pushed off, and my foot caught on a nail. Foot stayed there as I went in. I needed a few stitches after that and still have the scar.
Then about 10 years ago, I let myself off the church stage (not via the stairs) and when I landed, my felt something move out of place then back in. No pain, but I was unable to bend the knee. Had x-rays, they said it was a sprain. Two months later, I was still unable to bend it. Had an MRI, they said they’d get back to me in a few days, but the doctor called that afternoon & said I had a torn ACL & needed surgery ASAP. During surgery, they discovered a torn meniscus as well. Odd thing was, I never had pain (except from the physical therapist…)

Oh my goodness, Bren! No pain in that knee except in therapy? That’s a merciful rendering from the Lord! And wonderful. Ay, ay, ay! Hard to imagine you had to go so long with it before they discovered what you’d done. What’s up with that?

With no pain, and x-rays showing nothing, they figured the swelling was preventing movement. But when the swelling went away–and when I finally went back in to see the doctor-I didn’t want to keep bugging them–they figured they should take a closer look. 🙂

I guess we just have to say, “All’s well that ends well.” So glad it finally did end well!
