Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

   Mystery

So where were we? Ah, yes: frozen. Seriously, I wondered if I could finish it. The others I started took up my time and effort, and then I quit on them too. It was a hard time for writing over the last several years. Other than this blog, I wasn't doing much with my writing, and the novels languished. Three books in progress and none of them finished. I asked many people to pray for me, and they did – more than I deserved. Because many years ago when I was working on my first book, the Lord reassured me with these words: "If you pick up the pen, I'll give you the words." I love hearing that to this day. But for a long time, I didn't "pick up the pen" or tap on the keyboard.

I had to remind myself of those words when prayers started hitting their marks in my heart and soul. The Lord gave other keys to me, and I went back to work on this mystery.

Now it's done and at the publisher's. The cover design is 99% complete. The back cover copy is written. One stellar mystery writer has given me a treasured endorsement, and I'll be working on any text corrections soon.

Here's the deal: I didn't think I could write a mystery because as much as I read and love them, the complexity of good mysteries is not something I felt I could do. And to tell you the truth, it still isn't. Some of you will be judging that for yourselves. Others won't bother. Either way, I did the best I could. I love the characters, the setting because it was "home" to me for so many years, and it has a male protagonist/first person POV – my second attempt.

I enjoy hearing the backstory from authors concerning the different stories they've written. I hope you've enjoyed reading mine regarding my not-too-distant future release Race.

Father, I can never stop thanking you for giving me purpose. I love you, Lord, and thank you will never be enough. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Congratulations! We all know the battles of writing and the one thing that never changes is this: Finishing the novel is a big deal! So job well done. Can’t wait to see if this mystery spurs you to write another!

It’s hard stepping out of our comfort zone, isn’t it? And I’m sure RACE is better for it as you recognized your weaknesses. I’m very eager for RACE to come out!

Thanks so much, Bren. It is indeed hard to try something so different from my norm/comfort zone – probably why there’s the thread of romance running through it to anchor me. I do hope you’ll like it.

Congratulations! I think as writers we all have our insecurities. But finishing the book you set out to write is a huge success. I look forward to its release! 🙂

Barbara, wow. Thank you for this. You have done a great job with mystery – mine pales in comparison. But I’ll take anyone on with the romance element – but you did that well too! Thank you again.
