Secrets Never Die is the 5th book in the Morgan Dane Series by Melinda Leigh.
Attorney Morgan Dane's fiancΓ©, Private Investigator Lance Kruger, coaches a hockey team of at-risk boys. One of them (Evan) is missing after his stepdad is found dead in their home. Evan's mother Tina (a nurse) doesn't trust the police because of her past so Lance is the first one she calls after discovering her retired sheriff husband lying dead and obviously the victim of a murder. Together Morgan and Lance head for Tina's house to quickly examine the scene and search the place before the sheriff arrives and bars them from further access to the investigation.
Morgan's attorney instincts kick in automatically as the sheriff's attitude reveals his assumptions about the missing youth. Lance is determined to find Evan at all costs and his partner Lincoln Sharp who's recovering from near death three months earlier expands the research with of all things – for him – a reporter. Lance's agoraphobic mom does her part as the computer ace that she is by gathering information for them from her home.
Secrets Never Die switches back and forth from Evan's plight and injury to the investigation hampered by horrendous storms and Tina's less than forthcoming critical omissions.
Melinda Leigh has written another nail-biter with lots of action, pain, and misery fighting through the terrible challenges the search for Evan presents for each one of them. Lance and Morgan drag themselves from one wet and wild situation to another, while Sharp and the reporter find themselves facing an inevitable death.
The Morgan Dane Series is an exciting group of well-written suspenseful mysteries filled with complex storylines, wicked antagonists, a snake-like Assistant DA, and interesting peripheral characters. The family dynamic is well-represented and the love between Lance and Morgan and her three daughters is presented with tenderness and commitment.
There is some profanity.
Father, only you know our hearts. May those who use the gifts you've given them know from whom they come. Please continue to bless Melinda with the stories you have just for her to tell. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
