Throwback Thursday

This note was from a highly respected literary agency back in 2004 regarding my submission of The Famous One. Although it was regarding a rejection by the agents, it was also an affirmation of my writing and the story, and for that I was exceedingly grateful. 

     "Although my office gave your manuscript a favorable review for voice, character development and innovative plotline, I cannot speak for the agents and must defer to their expert judgment as to which authors and projects they feel they can fully commit their limited time and attention. I can tell you that in most cases, if strong writing like yours is declined, the agents' inside information on publishers' needs is the reason."

 

Father, you know the path for me, ordained before conception. I thank you for the journey all along the way. May I give you all the trust you deserve and keep traveling the way you've designed for me. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

    That’s a very affirming rejection! And it really points to, IMO, the role that marketing plays in the publishing industry. I’ve heard it said many times that the strongest voice in a pub meeting is the marketer. It’s not about the quality of the book, but what the marketer thinks they can sell.

    I’m of the opinion that marketing fiction is a mystery to CBA. They do a bang-up job of marketing their stand-by authors who are well-known and sell lots of books, but others who travel a bit off the beaten path or work in different genres – not so much. And with those authors they practically have to market themselves which is not a strength at all for many of us. Realistically, and this is my opinion, with a good title, a great cover, and an enticing blurb, the strength and reach of a good publishing house can draw readers in, but “mediocre” efforts in any/all of those can also sink a novel.
    It’s the best reason for rejection I ever got, I can tell you that! Hahaha!
