Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

As a reader, consider these questions: How do you want a new novel advertised (or marketed)? What sells you on a new book? What in your opinion is overkill? How do you want to be convinced to invest in a new story?

Authors, how would you answer the same questions?

Father, help us authors to know your desires in the arena of marketing. We're desperate for you whether we know it or not. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

As a writer, those are the questions we constantly ask ourselves! I haven’t discovered the right answers yet. 😀 So, I’m more interested in what readers have to say.

Marketing? I used to just browse the books at Sams. Then I got an e-reader. I rely on Into the Fire to let me know if Sibella Giorello has a new book out…or Brendda Anderson, Charles Martin, James Scott Bell or Steven James. Sometimes I’ll go to an author’s website to see if there’s a new book, but I’ve got quite a backlog yet.
Authors new to me? Recommendations by you, friends or Brenda Anderson will always get me to try a new author.
I have had also had success with new authors by judging a book by its cover, which REALLY needs to have a good title in addition to the visual. If the cover is enticing enough, but the title is silly I’ll read the blurb on the back. I used to always read the back, but so many reveal too much any more. I still judge by covers with digital books.

Great answers, Debra. That still boils down to the favorite choice of “word of mouth” which makes readers’ responses to this pretty much all that matters. Right, Bren?
And I totally agree about blurbs, Deb. I might read one sentence until it starts to get too detailed. And I also agree regarding covers and titles – which is why I sometimes go to what might be considered “extremes” by the cover designers assigned to me. And another reason why I self-publish. I want my title and a cover that makes me go, “That’s it!”
