Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Authors take the time – if they have it – to ponder their careers. Are they satisfied with their books? Have they done everything they can think of to do to engineer success? Have they paid others to do what they cannot, i.e. promote, sell, market? Do they continue in their current vein of writing, production, general conduct?

My answers would be in order: Yes. No. Some. Who knows?

Creating novels is not a hobby for me, but yet the way I've approached it is clearly unprofessional.

I tried hard at first to be traditionally published. I came close once.

The trouble is I'm a lousy marketer in spite of believing in the stories I've written. Many an author has said, "All I want to do is write – the rest I'm not good at and don't want to do it."

I love the story I'm working on now – but I've loved most of those I've written.

So much for Monday's musings . . .

Father, I can't write word one without you. Apart from you, there is no inspiration, nothing. Thank you is never enough. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

All good thoughts to ponder. I just remind myself that God’s version of success looks very different from the world’s version. It’s our obedience that matters.
    To answer your ponderings:
Are you satisfied with your books? Mostly. I’ve had to rush too many over the past couple years so they’re not as polished as I’d prefer.
Have you done everything they can think of to do to engineer success? Certainly not everything. I’d like to learn more about Amazon ads, which seem to make a huge difference for those who know the system well. But you need time to learn.
Have you paid others to do what you cannot, i.e. promote, sell, market? I’ve done several paid promotions. I’ve learned what works for me and what doesn’t.
Do you continue in your current vein of writing, production, general conduct? Well, I have been, but that will change once my next book is released. I need to take a sabbatical to spend more time with my husband while we’re still able to create memories. As of now, his Alzheimer’s regression is on a gradual downward slope, but that could change tomorrow.

That’s key to my writing life and beyond, Bren. I’m sure some would consider it a cop out. I do not. We do it God’s way, period. When we fail, it shows. Others take their directions. I take mine.
Bren, I think you’ve done a fantastic job of finding what works for you. You’ve written a lot of novels now in the vein you’re committed to, you don’t do overkill but you promote well. You have a good website and have created a following. Well done!
And, yes, what you’ve done and will do with your husband is crucial for this time in your lives. Again: well done!
