Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Five of my all-time favorite Christmas gifts:

My Schwinn bicycle and my Black Beauty book in elementary school.

A beautiful horse area rug with a mare and foal that I still have. Got it from my parents in the late 60s.

Two fabulous stylish winter coats from my husband – the first one before we were married; the second many years later.

My "Crave" Taos boots. Love these! Got another pair last Christmas!

    Seahawks stuff.

There are so many more that I could've listed here, but I picked these randomly without overthinking it.

Father, Jesus is the greatest gift of all to every one of us. We're all desperate for you whether we know it or not. You're the reason for the season, and I'm so grateful to you forever. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I want you to know that all of my Christmas decorations are up and have been for over a week. I love it!

I want you to also know I have wrapped presents under the tree and others ready to wrap and/or deliver. Stockings are nearly stuffed. Still have some shopping to do, but I'd say I'm 3/4 done.

Believe me, I'm not telling you this to brag or gloat. On the contrary. I'm letting you know how much I love and celebrate Christmas. It's always been a huge deal to me and especially after meeting Jesus.

So. You'd think someone who loves Christmas as much as I do would love to sit back and watch Christmas movies and/or read some Christmas novels. Right? Well, you'd be oh-so-wrong! I don't like or watch Christmas movies. I don't like Christmas stories and have yet to enjoy a Christmas novel. Definitely not my thing. Strange, huh?

Father, thank you for the pure message of Christmas, for giving us your Son, for sending the Holy Spirit in your time. We're desperate for you today just as we've always been. Thank you is never enough. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Autumn, no matter where you go, God's artistry graces the season.

And we thank you for all of the beauty, Lord. Your colors are amazing. Your designs breathtaking. I can't imagine how stunning heaven must be. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I find it amusing sometimes to read the comments to these oldies. One person said if you listened to music in 1979, this song was a part of your life. Music has power. The lyrics to this song are typical of the time – irresponsible "love", playing to the emotions. It's a pretty tune but "sadly" speaks of the ongoing fail of morality.

Father, some of us get right when we finally realize the Truth of your Son. Apart from you, we can do nothing – and certainly not succeed at any kind of moral life. Thank you for rescuing me. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

(The beginning of Chapter 1 from an unpublished novel titled Wounds . . . and Healings)

Faith Daniels looked up as the tiny bell over the door tinkled quietly. He was the first customer of the morning, the darkness remaining outside as he walked in and closed the door.

“Good morning,” she acknowledged him as he looked past her and above her at the menu of coffees, teas, and other beverages.

He gave her a hint of a smile to indicate he wasn’t trying to ignore her. She waited, not wanting to pester him. He’d come to a conclusion soon enough. They always did. The customers who couldn’t choose were almost always friendly, outgoing, bubbly even. He wasn’t one of them. She’d seen that kind of look before but wasn’t sure if she could place where or when. When it dawned on her, she blushed in spite of herself. She’d seen it multiple times looking in the mirror.

She busied herself with the pastries, putting the remaining selections in the case.

“Uh, I’ll take a double espresso and one of those,” he said finally, pointing to an éclair.

         “Cream or whipped cream?”

“Oh. Yeah. A little cream, please.”

She began to fix the espresso and put the éclair on a plate. “Have a seat, and I’ll bring it right out to you, sir.”

He smiled slightly—surprised a bit by the “sir”, she supposed. He sat at a faraway table for two at the other end of the shop, folded his hands on the table and stared out the window into the dark rainy morning.

When the coffee was ready, she took it, the éclair, a fork, and some extra cream to his table.

“Thank you,” he said, finally looking directly at her. “What do I owe ya?”

“Four dollars and 50 cents,” she said quietly. “But you can pay on the way out if you like.”

Instead, he pulled out his wallet from a hip pocket of his faded Levis and handed her two fives. “It smells good,” he said gratefully.

“Thank you. I'll be right back with your change."

         "No. You keep it."

         "You sure?" she asked, hesitant.

"Positive." And he managed another brief smile.

"Anything else I can get you?” she added, her voice quiet, her sincerity evident.

“I wish,” he said almost inaudibly, then smiled up at her again. “I’m fine.”

Father, again and again, apart from you, I can do nothing. Thank you for it all. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

    Blessed is the man

who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked

or stand in the way of sinners

or sit in the seat of mockers.

But his delight is in the law of the Lord,

and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree planted by streams of living water,

which yields its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither.

       Whatever he does prospers.

    Not so the wicked!

       They are like chaff

       that the wind blows away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,

nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked will perish.

    Psalm 1 (NIV)

Five things I want my novels to accomplish:

Touch the soul of the reader

Give the reader characters they can love, hate, relate to, envision

Make sure the spiritual aspect(s) grabs hold of hearts and demands consideration

Allow the reader to see places, feel emotions, invest thoughts

Feel the time it took to read the story was time well spent

Father, the only way I can do these things is with and by you. No other way. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of writing stories. Apart from you, I can do nothing. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Such a long time ago. I titled it: "nicole by nicole". What else? So young.

Father, this is before I knew your Son. Thank you for rescuing me several years later. So sorry it wasn't sooner. Thank you is never enough. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Autumn in Washington state. There's so much beauty here in each season. They have their own distinct colors, scents, and personalities.

Father, thank you for my home. You know my heart. Thank you is never enough. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
