Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Five things most people enjoy, but I rarely or never do:

Ice cream – I eat it once in awhile. (Favorite flavors: B&R's Pralines and Cream; Daiquiri Ice)

Popcorn – Rarely eat popcorn.

PepsiNever drink Pepsi. I'm a Coca Cola girl.

CoffeeNever drink coffee. Love the smell, hate the taste. (And I come from a long line of coffee drinkers.)

Bread – It's not like I don't ever eat bread. I do, but I'm not big on sandwiches or eating bread with a meal. My dad had and my husband has bread with his meals. And I only eat certain kinds of bread (i.e. sourdough, French, Dave's Killer Bread Good Seeds).

Father, you love variety. You gave us our individuality and a plethora of wonderful things to choose from. Thank you for it all. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Sports. I don’t get the fixation with sports. I used to watch some men’s tennis, but that was specifically to watch for certain players (who are now retired so I don’t watch at all), not my obsession with the sport.
Coffee: I hate coffee. I can’t stand the smell or the taste.
Seafood: Even growing up near the Chesapeake Bay I have never understood people’s love of seafood. I find it revolting.
Concerts: I already have more than enough stress. I have no desire to fight more traffic, be around more people, and gain additional headaches. I’d rather buy the CD of the group/artist & listen at home.
Talking on the phone: People are OBSESSED with phones–sometimes I see folks with their phones affixed to their ear and I want to say “Get a room!”. I could care less about phones. I keep one to call for help if I get a flat tire or make the occasional call to talk to friends and family. I attach no self importance to having any particular brand of phone nor does my world revolve around one.

Oh definitely cell phones. It was late when I posted so I didn’t think of them: I hate cell phones and all the talking on them. I’m even embarrassed when I have to use one because I hate them that much. And mine is so old I’m surprised it still works – although since I rarely use it, it shouldn’t wear out, right?
Sports is not just a fixation. It’s an appreciation for the athletic skills and in teamwork if it’s a team sport. It’s an escape from the crises of life. It’s admiration for particular abilities whether playing or coaching. Some people love sports in general. I’m a professional football fan – my team (Seahawks). I watch a very little bit of college football – mostly when the UW Huskies play (I went there briefly). I never watched it until I understood the game. Professional football is amazingly complex with such tremendously skilled players.
I usually only watch the Triple Crown races now that we’re out of the sport. Equine athletes are beautiful and each one is unique like people with the same skills but different personalities. It is the Sport of Kings when done right, but there is corruption in the sport and when we quit, I quit.
I love some fish, lobster although I rarely eat it, crab if someone else shells it, etc. We eat a lot of salmon.
The last concert I went to was a couple of years ago. Very “civilized”. A Chris Botti concert at Benaroya Hall. It was fabulous. The old days of rock ‘n’ roll concerts every weekend are well behind me. 😉

So good that you and I have writing and faith in God in common. Still waiting for Florida to have Blue Bell back in the freezers. Homemade Vanilla/Peach Cobbler is my favorite. And Coffee, I’m from south Louisiana so coffee is a birthright. Little known factoid – the bolder the roast of coffee, the less caffeine due to roasting time. Therefore, it’s Emeralds Big Easy Bold Roast at night for me. Folgers or anything instant is not really coffee but a progressive plot to undermines what’s left goof in American society.

Oh my, four of those are staples in life! 😉 I have to agree with coffee. Never cared for it, can taste even the smallest hint of it in anything. Being a Minnesota Lutheran, not being a coffee-drinker is almost sacrilegious!
    So my list would be:
    Coffee
Cell Phones – I have a cell phone, but only have it for emergencies or going out of town. I absolutely don’t want to wrap my life around it as so many people do nowadays.
Salad Dressing – can’t stand it on salads. Would prefer to eat a salad plain or with a smattering of cheese.
The Gilmore Girls – don’t understand its popularity at all. And right now people are beside themselves because the Gilmore Girls are going to add more shows on Netflix. Leaves me scratching my head.
Mexican food – I’ve got a very bland, Scandinavian palate, so anything with spices other than salt & pepper is too spicy. Give me meat & potatoes and I’m happy. 🙂

Here’s my 5 foods that most people enjoy that I don’t.
    1) Hamburgers – I have no idea why, but I have never liked them. When my mom or grandma would make them, I would load mine with tomatoes, lettuce cheese, and ketchup.
    2) steak – not surprising I guess
    3) pork chops
    4) corn (and I grew up in Illinois!)
    5) mashed potatoes – they’re fine, but I don’t enjoy them like most midwesterners do

I don’t eat much red meat but I do periodically–just went through my cheeseburger phase this week. I can totally relate to the disinterest in corn. As animal feed it’s great, or a little in mexican food is great, otherwise, no thanks.
I don’t even know who the Gilmore Girls are but I’m definitely not interested.
Brenda A, this wouldn’t be for you since you neither like salad dressing or spices, but Chipotle Ranch is awesome!

Tim, yes we do have faith and writing in common and our divine friendship. 😉 As you know, my husband’s a “mud bug” too and another not-so-genteel nickname for a Louisianan. He’s a coffee drinker but didn’t really get serious about it until he started driving semis. He loves it. And his preference is Tully’s Espresso and occasionally will brew their Sumatra. He prefers the dark roasts and generally can’t do the caffeine at night unless accompanied by a big restaurant meal. No Blue Bell back yet? That’s taken awhile since they pulled it, huh?
Bren, no salad dressing? Hmm. I love Bleu Cheese, Roquefort, and/or Ranch on mine. Never watched The Gilmore Girls. Love Mexican food, but I have friends with your palate. 😉 I don’t eat it “hot”, but I’ve learned even the mild spices are too much for your kind. 😉
Deb, you apparently aren’t real fond of meat. I mean, hamburgers, steak, pork? So are you a chicken and fish eater? Corn is not my favorite, but I don’t mind it. I don’t like to eat corn on the cob because it gets in my teeth. 😉 Good mashed potatoes are fine with me – but I don’t crave them or anything. And I don’t eat them with gravy. I should’ve put gravy on my list – rarely eat gravy.
Brenda, I eat a hamburger maybe once a month. Steak even less, but I love a good steak.

What good’s a mashed tater without gravy? 😎

I can’t remember ever liking gravy. Over anything. Just butter, thank you, and sometimes just plain. (And it’s not like I haven’t tasted good gravy. My mom made great gravy. I just never liked it on anything.)

Oh give me pepperoni or bacon any day! Otherwise I could easily skip meat. I ate a lot of hot dogs as a kid. As a mature adult, I’ve switched to brats and other grown-up sausages 😉 I also always liked fish or grilled cheese sandwiches. I was fine with ground beef if it was an ingredient in Italian or Mexican. I enjoyed the nights Mom made chicken, but I always chose the smallest piece.
At a restaurant I’m always drawn to the meatless entrees. I’m a big fan of cheese and beans! This could be the reason my husband grills almost every evening April – October. He is fine with the fact that I always buy chicken breasts, salmon and brats. During the colder months I make turkey chili, sausage and bean soup, and a handful of meatless dishes.
I’m fine with corn, but like mashed potatoes, I just don’t get much out of it.
As for your list…I was so proud of myself the day I could drive through a Dairy Queen and only order for the boys! I could just about live on popcorn, but finally gave it up a few years ago because of my teeth. I like Pepsi, and every soda I’ve ever tried, but have never kept it in the house and seldom drink it. I started drinking coffee a couple of years after we moved to Minnesota and would hate to give it up.

Funny, I’m not a big bacon eater. Mostly like it on BLTs. And pepperoni? Bleh. I’ll eat it on pizza, but it’s definitely not my favorite.
It’s funny though. I love veggie pizzas or burritos.
And like you, Deb, I prefer hamburger for tacos or the like, and, although it’s a sacrilege from my background, I will use it to make spaghetti.
