Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Okay, let's do a reverse of our last Friday Five. What five places do you have zero interest in visiting?

Any of the Arab countries

Most of Africa

Most of the "stans" (Afghanistan, Pakistan, other "stans")

Phillipines

Indonesia

However, my choices do not mean these places have nothing to offer. I'm fully aware there is beauty both in landscapes and people types. That said, I do not want to travel there.

Lord, you have placed beauty everywhere. It might be hard to find in some places and shrouded in spiritual darkness, but you go to the dark to provide the light. You know hearts. Thank you for rescuing me from the darkness. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Well I could take a short-cut and just say anything that is not the United States. LOL!
But I would be further specific and say although I’d like to visit every U.S. state just to say I’ve visited every U.S. State, the only ones that ruly matter to me are seeing the WESTERN United States. That’s where it’s at baby. 😎 At least for me.
If it were not for the fact that my family still lives there, I would never again visit Maryland, Delaware, or New Jersey, to name a quick three. I’ve only been in Florida long enough to change planes but could care less if I never go there again either. That’s four. And I visited New York once for half a day and vowed I would never return, and I haven’t. That’s five specific places.
For some people, they are the right places, but not for me.

I’m with you on the east coast except for the middle line of states there. Just zero attraction for me. I confess it’s mostly because of their politics. But anyway . . . don’t really care for a lot of the middle northern states’ appeal either. Just me.
Love the west coast (except for their politics too).

I’ll just ditto what you said, Nicole, and add Mexico to it. I always wonder why, with so many risking their lives to escape Mexico, that so many people want to vacation there. Doesn’t add up to me.
As for those middle northern states, ahem!, you should give us a try! 😉 That’s actually where I’ve done the majority of my traveling–we usually travel by car–and I’m amazed at the diversity of landscape and the beauty of our nation! And, in spite of what coasters seem to believe, there is a lot, lot, lot of open, unpopulated space in our country!

I’m of the same mind, Nicole, with your 5 and for the same reason. I do not spend enough time praying for the people who live in these places.
I’m with BK on New Jersey. That would be the last U.S. state I would want to visit. I’ve never met anyone who’s been there and likes it. I have a friend who lived there 14 years and was glad to leave.
I’m with Brenda on Mexico. I’ve seen the beautiful pictures. I love the food. I love listening to my mom’s neighbors in the evenings when the family gathers to sing and play the guitar. When I lived in California, I had several friends from Mexico. I’m so glad they don’t have to live there any more. Mexico would have been a good pick for last week’s “in a perfect world” travels.
Here are 5 more places I am not interested in visiting.
    1) Russia – A friend who traveled almost the entire globe as a professional athlete for 10 years said Moscow was the only place where he was truly afraid. And he had been to Columbia and countries in Asia and Eastern Europe. Besides, northern Russia is REALLY cold.
    2) any country on the Equator – I met a woman who grew up on the Equator in South America. She said it was so humid her would get moldy.
    3) Antarctica – Penguins smell really bad, and I don’t think there’s anything else to do there.
    4) North Korea
    5) India – I love Indian food, but I want to eat it here in the U.S.

Bren and Debra, I thought of you when I wrote that – and I know there is amazing beauty there, and I’ve never doubted the open spaces. Also, I’ve never met anyone from Minnesota who I haven’t liked. As with anyplace, mostly good people. That kind of cold in the winter does me in. (Even with my own state, it’s the politics that surface that drive me nuts.)
Yes, North Korea is definitely out! I debated listing Russia, almost said Siberia. I also almost listed India – no desire to visit it. Of course the resorts in Mexico are lovely, but, yes, the poverty and drug cartels make it a no go.

Oh, I see that I left out “hair”. The woman I met who grew up on the equator said it was so humid her hair got moldy. She said it was just nasty.
